1973..QE2..FOSNI Band..Cat4 Med Cruise..Yes, it's true, cheers for that one Graham, it nearly made up for Lanimer Day..ANYWAY!!!..During the cruise the chartered passengers(All millionaires) and entertainers(inc. Joe Loss, Ella Fitzgerald, Arty Shaw, Dutch Swing College Band and of course us topping the bill), shared the same privelleges and dining arrangements. At lunch we were sitting with a couple of Joe Loss' trumpeters, who were much more used to the high class menus than us. Fred ordered soup starter which was "chilled tomato". I thought it a strange choice, thinking a tomato juice would have done the same job, but said nothing. When the soup arrived Fred took a sip, slammed his spoon down and declared "GEEEZ THAT SOUP'S COLD"in his broadest Carrikfergus accent..Only guys like Fred could get their "chilled" and "CHILLIED" spelling mixed up...

I recall Dartmouth Band and an orchestra gig at Plaisterers Hall. Not generally being allowed out of the College, we took as much booze as could be safely carried. Needless to say, we were all plastered at Plaisterers and Fred's task was to stand at the reception in Blues and direct dignitaries to the cloackrooms. This was to be done in a military style befitting the occassion - whatever that maybe?? Clearly it was a bad idea because as the diginitaries arrived, Fred was waving his arms like a drunk policeman directing traffic and repeatedly shouting, in that Carrikfergus accent previously described, "ladies p!ss on the left and gentleman p!ss on the right". Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe it was Ted Heath who took offence and had Fred removed from duties. Great days....
