My neighbour has appeared with an old York Tenor Sax. which he bought at an auction sale. It's gold laquered and in fairly scruffy condition, but all the keys/pads etc. seem fine. The only markings I can see are YORK (which looks more like Yark) on the front, and a serial no. stamped on the back. Any of you boffins know anything about these..??? What's the latest way/material for cleaning it up..??

You are right Rab, I do. I even know how to spell it as well. SAXOPHONE. York saxamaphones are an inferior class of instrument compared to what is around nowadays. The likes of Yanigasawa, Selmer, Yamaha et al, puts the York in the shade. It is basically a school or student model, similar to the Jupiter. Someone previously said it could be a Lark, and they were not far off the mark there either. The Lark is a make of stringed instrument from China of inferior quality, again a student model. Great for children to learn on, but lacks tone and finesse for the more advanced player. I'm sure it applies to almost all instruments where you have different ability levels. Brass instruments have their student and professional models too. Conn, Olds etc are the professional choice, where perhaps B&H are for the good amateur.
So all in all then Rab, York Saxophones are for the student and depending on condition worth about £250 - £400. _________________ One is hardly sensible of fatigue while he marches to music.

Do you know....that really makes me seeth. Why do beginners get all the $hit to play on. They should start as they mean to go on and get a decent instrument. How kids are expected to play on a crap piece of poo always amazes me. I see adverts for crap pianos in the paper that say 'ideal for beginners'. If you want your sprog to sound good on an instrument, afford them the courtesy of providing a decent one. (Oh and i wasnt having a go at you Botty....just one of my pet hates simmering to the surface)
