1960s - Which Band is this?Is this even a band? The file name was: Aden - HMTDunera1960 is that any help?
The only name I have is Peter John Rogers RM14414 who is in the picture and was probably a bugler.
Any help will be great, this is to help his son out as Peter has recently passed away, his obit was in G&L recently

| text of email wrote: | You may have known my father, you may have not, but it was worth contacting you nonetheless.
His name was Peter John Rogers RM14414 ,who served with the 3rd Royal Marine Commando in the mid 50's and early 60's(1954-64?).
He served in "40","41","42" and "43" commando
He was affectionately known as "Sticks", I guess that was due to him being a bugler/drummer.
He also made a number of journeys on H.M.T. Dunera of which I have one photo of with a line up of him and several of his colleagues.
He has sadly recently passed away (Jan 26th 2006) through ill health but I am in the quest for photos , stories and basically anything to do with my father.
If you do have any information regarding him I would appreciate your reply, if not ,then I do apologise for wasting your time.
Have attached the photo of him in 1960 for your perusal
My kindest regards to you,
Russell Rogers (Son of Peter) |

If you look closely Deli, most of them have what looks like Lyres on their right arms which would indicate a group of Musicians. So they could possibly be a small ships band?

The two badger does appear to have a Lyre on his Right arm. Could it be 3 Cdo Bde band? How big would that band have been in 1960 and would it have been in Aden?

The photo aboveHi , everyone. Firstly allow me to introduce myself, my name is Russ and the photo above if of my dad and his mates returning from Aden 1960 on HMT Dunera. His service records show he was in 40 commando at the time. My dad is bottom right of the photo.
My dad joined as a boy bugler in 1954 (15 yrs old) and stayed at Deal until Oct 1956 when he was transferred to Eastney. While at Deal, he had the honour of playing at The Edinburgh tattoo of which Richard Valentine's website has given me access to a line up of that band. And I've found my dad on there through other contacts.
In Jan 1957 he was on HMS Maidstone until Aug. 1959. At this point he was tranferred to 42 Commando for 4 months, then to 40 Commando from Dec 1959 till April 1961 where his rank strangely changes from Bugler to Marine. and his ROP goes to 21/- and also added is "PRO RM" . He then returnd to 41 Commando before completing his service with 43 Commando until Sept 63 whilst also serving on HMS Albion.
There we are gentlemen, in a nutshell. Thank you all for contributing to my search in some way. I was very proud of my dad and his relationship with the Marines. It is quite sad that him and I did not spend the time to do this earlier in life.
I look forward to any posts that are added and where this goes.
Any further info requested , I shall do my best to give it to you.
Thank you all once again.

Hi Russ,
I'm afraid that picture is a bit before my time, but I'm pretty sure that it's Stan Wilkinson, (trombone) seated rear left as we loof at the picture. I'm sure the others will be identified in the fullness of time, and names will be forthcoming..

Yes...welcome to the site Russ. Please be a regular and I'm sure some of the more mature members will be waking from their afternoon nap soon and provide some more info for you. In the mean time, join in and have some fun.

Thanks for the welcome ! I appreciate it .
I've been here before to see if I could get info regarding my dad but seen that this site was mainly for bandsmen, although my dad was a musician, it seemed that this was exclusive. Sorry for judging the book by its cover so to speak.
I understand how difficult it is to recall someone from 50 years ago so I intend to give all the prompts I can, remember "Nostalgia , its the only way forward " :-)
Thanks fellas , for all your help

Russ has just sent this to me to post up for you all, it is 1959-60ish and the two guys are called Jan and Brum if that helps any of our more senior members. They were oppos of Russ's dad so off you and seek my hounds.
I'll let our historical researcher know about this thread and see if he has any input into the thread

Thanks again "Deli " !
Yeah , these 2 gents are Jan and Brum (as we look at them ). They're part of 40 commando based in Malta.
Now , if my dad took this photo then surely he'd have the good sense to have one taken of himself looking this smart ! Errrr no !
There again , he might have , and someone else has got it , just like I have this cracking photo of Jan and Brum.

Rab, could that person possibly be Stan Glasspole? It looks as if there is a vague and familiar look about him? What do you think?

I think your right Rab... Thats Stan Wilkinson and next to him is a guy called McKay... ex staff band circa 65\70/ The 3rd Commando Brigade was based in malta about that time before moving to Singapore to cover the Borneo Campaign in the early 60's. The Band was always actively used in Brigade. You may also notice that they appear to wear Commando flashes and commando daggers. The Bulger at the front has dodgy socks!!!!
He is also wearing a commando unit lanyard. Brigade Band wore dark green. So if this was 42 the Buglers would be white.
I am sure Col Jim could throw more light on this for names.
Cannot recognise the two buglers in Nos Ones. The man for this would be Piner.. Major. very interesting pics

Hi Dan , some interesting info coming my way , thanks.
By referring to the bugler with the dodgy socks and the questionable lanyard, exactly which Marine are you referring to ?
And Stan Wilkinson being ?

The guy front right has the white lanyard and there are 3 with dodgy socks!
Dodgy socks are 2 in the front row: right and second from the left and the guy left hand side of second row.

He certainly pulled his socks up when he married my mum ! :-)
The tattoo photo , he's 2nd row from the front, on the right (17 years old!)-see my profile photo.
I have this strange feeling when I see these photos that I wished I could have known him then.

Stan was a particularly fine (and large) trombone player, who spent his final serving years, (I Think) in Staff Band at Deal...It wouldn't surprise me if he was still in that area..?? Townsergeant..??..
Regarding the dodgy socks...It's not a derogatory remark, but one of the things drummed into us all at a very early age. All the Band had to wear the same colour AND SHADE of socks when on duty. Thus came the famous saying "Dress of the day will be No.2's and Dark Black Socks"...
Your Dad would certainly have seen the humorous side of the socks..Good luck with your hunting..

Hi Rab,
the socks issue is quite a funny one actually , I didn't take it as a derogatory remark in any way, honestly. I welcome your input, everyone's input , the more the merrier.
I think the comment regarding the lanyard is one of concern. So , my dad is wearing the lanyard of which commando ?
My dads service record and the info on the rear of the photo both state that he was in 40 commando at this period although 4 weeks later he did actually transfer to 42 commando.
I'm getting confused.

He's not wearing a unit lanyard, just Bugler's dress cords, this should help you though:
In World War II the 1st RM Battalion wore a white lanyard, and artillery men in the RM Division in 1940–3 wore a plaited knife lanyard (on the right shoulder), as worn by the Royal Artillery.
Unit lanyards are worn by all ranks in Commandos in Lovat Dress, and earlier when in KSD and khaki battle dress. These lanyards, originally naval lanyards dyed, are worn on the right shoulder, and since the mid–1950s have been single cotton braid lanyards with a ‘Turks head’ slip knot.
The Commando lanyards were — and are for those not disbanded: dark blue for those in HQ Commando Forces and the Logistic Rgt; dark green for HQ 3 Cdo Bde; light blue 40 Cdo; old gold 41 Cdo; white 42 Cdo; scarlet 43 Cdo; scarlet 45 Cdo; old gold/scarlet Comacchio Coy/Grp; old gold/rifle green 539 Assault Sqn;and dark blue/light blue 847 naval Air Sqn.

The 4th bugler from the right i would swear is Robbie ( shits) Evernden. ( some people just don't change). To his left is Alan Piner?

Right click and save picture as to your local drive. OPen with MIcrosoft picture viewer and use the zoom function.
If you have problems I can cut and zoom onto the forum but it is fairly easy to do onto your local machine. | Bronco wrote: | | Can we have close up's of the remainder? |

General Melchett : real helpful explanation that as it was starting to confuse the issue regarding my dad's commando unit at the time. I should really have gone wiht my first instinct which was that it was a bugler's dress cord.
Bronco : You know these chaps well (Robbie and Alan) ?
|
Bronco

Robbie was a Sgt bugler (instructor )at Deal when i joined in 1972. he was promoted soon after to c/sgt before retirement around 1975? Alan was a well established bugler who served well beyond the normal retirement age of 40yrs. He has i believe, two sons and a daughter currently serving in the Band service.

If you know them , could you point them in this direction, I'm sure there's a good chance one of them might recall my dad ?
Thanks

Stan is still large and still living in Deal! I got that info from JJ O'Neill last night at the DMBT Meeting last night at the RMA.
(DMBT = Deal Memorial Bandstand Trust....RMA = RMA! )
I also spoke to Syd Rose in town yesterday Rab....He said he remembers your name but couldn't put a face to it...Not sure if that's a good thing or a bad thing!

Thanks for that Billy. I always had the greatest respect for Sid, and I'm sure he'll wake up in a cold sweat some night when he finally puts the face to the name...
