COCHRANE COCKUP!!( SORT OF A SPLIT)

To my good friend, mentor, and damn fine Corps Drum Major Dave Buchanan i apologise.... but this was so good.
The FOSNI Band led by Drum Major Dave Buchanan under the direction of then Lt Graham Hoskins were doing Divisions for the ships company at HMS Cochrane outside the main office block on the small parade there.

The normal routine was for the Naval Guard to march of to their tune 2 x three beat rolls and off we were supposed to go to our tune. The guard was located adjacent to the band and had to execute a swift right wheel and eyes right as they marched past the skipper.

For some reason known only to Drummy B at the first set of rolls for the guard Dave stepped off and the guard neatly swung in behind him. Dave immaculate as ever threw up his quivering salute only to realise that the sound of music was not with him!!! Dave completed his march past, broke away from the guard marched back past the skipper excuted another salute, rejoined the band in time to march off with us... yet another salute!!!. Most of the Band did not even realise what was going on ingrossed as they were in the dots...... but the Corps of Drums was stifling hysteria. When I tell you that the drummers were Cpl Bglr Geordie Rowell, myself, GEORGE COAD (name always in capitals as a sign of respect!), Fred Knell and the late Les Griffin you may well imagine that Drummy was not going to get away with any excuse for his treble march past!!! As always Dave took it in good part and in his own inimitable style... charged us all with laughing on divisions.!!!!!

Not quite the legendary Lincoln Split but bloody good to watch...LOL

Lincoln Split

I was there at the original one and only Lincoln Split. One old man in the crowd looked at me and said " was that supposed to happen?" I replied "Oh yes...they have been perfecting that one for years and the bandy running frantically at the back trying to catch the band up is called Doddy" The old man looked worried. I said " are you ok old man?" He replied " I was until a bloody Aardvark spoke to me"
