Cologne Re-United

Right now we have this do we need to keep the Cologne Re-United site? the only difference really is the photo album / files section - and if we keep it quiet enough the pipers won't know where we have gone

Would it be possible to move the phots here, perhaps as a subtopic in the "gallery" section?
admin

Never heard of it? Got a link?
You could use whatever it is for your photo hosting or switch the whole thing here. Images could be hosted through photobucket if needs be, the choilce is yours.
Quasijock

Don't let's clutter this site up with phots most will have seen already. Keep them together in photobucket like the USA phots are.

Here it is: http://uk.groups.yahoo.com/group/colognereunited/
I'l let Dolly reply on the other stuff (photobucket etc) as he's the uber leutenant of Cologne Reunited (and I'm a teckie dinosaur).

ZedHorn

it's not cluttering up, alot will not have seen before as they have never been to Koln, if they want to know what they are getting themselves in for then this is a good way!!!
we could (proverbial we mind you) a gallery via a link??
The Donkey

May as well put it all in one place if it saves you some work and Deli doesn't mind.
Anne Picc

Just another thought - perhaps keeping it where it is keeps the antics away from world wide viewing? Might be too easy to portray the wrong impression of what happens in Cologne on here. At present we have total control over who views who can access the site which we won't have on here. There's nothing to hide, but people may get the wrong idea and not understand that we work our socks of there representing the Navy - its just that we know how to work hard and play hard when we manage to grab some free time. I'd vote for keeping it where it is.
Anne Picc

Mmmmm. Just been told by Dolly that access to the Cologne forum is not by invite only - any one can join just like here. Blows my point out of the water
The BB's

Anne I think you're right after all there are a few of our German friends who also enjoy the interaction on the Cologne reunited site. People can still register on the site if they wish to
Also there are a lot of phots so quite a job to move them all, but then what do I know its probably just a click of a button!!!!!!!
Anne Picc

Good point re our Dom Stader friends. More reason to keep it where it is as you say. IMHO anyway.
ZedHorn

becoming increasingly concerned at the level of maturity, sensibleness and insight that you are currently showing Anne.. I think this diet isn't good for you anymore!!!
Bobw

Thing is, if Colognereunited closes, would I be able to post mp3 and midi files of strange German pop songs on the RNVB forum?

Another thing is, would you be bothered?
Anne Picc

Don't worry Zed - have reintroduced preferred liquid refereshments and occasional chocolate biscuits. Personality will return to normal soon
bassdrumal

Cologne

Heard Lots about it

Can i come ?
Anne Picc

Anyone from any of the RN Volunteer bands can put their name down - a sign up list is sent to each bandy usually around October so make sure you see it and put your name down. The lists then get sent in to Heron bandy and Dave picks the band. Numbers are limited so there is no guarantee you'll be chosen. Make sure you talk to someone who's been before though - its a tough gig and you need to know what you are letting yourself in for. Nothing like USA trip or the Vanne trip either from the stories I've heard of those two! PM me if you want more info
greenfairy

From what I've heard, Cologne would probably kill me! Still tempted to put my name down though.....
bassdrumal

Cologne causing damage eh? Death ? Sign me up !!! lol
Well i am pretty daft of course, and getting to be known as the clown with the drum i think ! Dave P certainly thinks im mad anyway
ZedHorn

what would he know - he's mad as a box of frogs himself.... and he dances like a loon!!!
ZedHorn

My version of a checklist for suitablility for Cologne

1. Be able to get the week off work - preferrably the day after too and not pull out at the last minute!
2. Ability to live on 3.5 hours max sleep per night, plus occasional on bus awkard position/crick your neck snoozums.
3. Liking for cold, weak german beer...
4. Acceptance of 'interesting' food!! but, beer is technically a vegetarian meal!
5. Marching - not technically perfect but able to move forward - and sometimes other directions and simultaneously carry / sling instrument, bash it or blow it for 3 to 4 hours, 2 days running.
6. Musicality - definitely desirable - it does help if we can play the dots..... no matter how drunk you are!
7. Dancing - Essential need to leave all sense of human dignity on the ferry and dance ridiculous dance routines infront of thousands of complete strangers whilst in rig, several times a night, three nights running and in the oddest of locations - inside and out!
8. Fancy dress... goes without saying!
9. Acceptance point blank, without question of everything that is just Karneval, just German, sometimes downright weird but hey.. it's Koln!!!
10. Ability to have.... ALAAF!!!!
greenfairy

I'd be ok if it wasn't for point 2. I don't work well with little sleep - just ask my fellow Nelsonites
A

If it didn't kill me, it won't kill you GF. Mind you, I was sober as I don't like beer!
The Donkey

Zed, I get the feeling that you've been formulating that list for some time and just waiting for an opportunity to use it!!!

You did, however miss one thing out....

The ability to be on time!!!!!!!!!!!!
ZedHorn

correction Donkey....

You are the one that lacks the ability to be on time!!!

An alarm clock or a reliable wingman is all that is needed... and those are not personal specifications - they are on the kit list!!!
The Donkey

I had 3 alarms and what I thought was a reliable Wingwoman!
Anne Picc

Only other one I can think of is ....

Ability to get the job done (preferably with a smile!) regardless of how tired, hungover, grumpy etc you feel. Genuine illness allowed as excuse but its got to be bad! Oh and did we mention the

and the ?
bassdrumal

Sounds almost too good to be true
Of course it also helps to have a Medic on stanbdy too
I Think i can just about manage most of those points. 6 Months to convince the bosses i need some...........erm........AT. Thats it - use the AT angle, im sure it will be ok !

ad of course they could fund it as well (I assume you are still serving). Cultural marching around Cologne, checking out the interesting local buildings, food, drinks, people, music, culture... yep, I'm sold on that one How much do you want?

another one... already 2 doctors, THE paramedic and the vomi nurse in the contingent... join the gang.... you know you wanna!!!
The BB's

There are just a few rules for Cologne, they are
See a chair - sit down
See food - eat
See a bed - sleep!!
See a toilet - use it (even if you don't want to, you never know where the next one will be)
and of course
See beer - drink.
Also all persons will receive their diploma in waiting.
You need to go a few times to get your degree

I nearly forgot see a band - play (sometimes whilst standing, sometimes while moving about, I thimk thats loosely called 'marching')
Bobw

More required attributes for your list:
Ability to march in step even though your left foot is trapped in a huge plastic bin bag in which the right foot of the guy behind you is also trapped.
Be able to scrape half a pound of horse poo, boiled sweets, toffees and broken glass off the bottom of your highly polished boots without being sick.
Attempt to carry on playing whilst some prat in the crowd empties a can of spray string in your face, without turning round and decking the git.
Ability to hear the pipers start up and only give a little groan rather than scream and run away.
To sit on a bus for a week (even if it does smell of vomit).
Eat a bowl of 'pink' without being surprised at finding slices of cucumber and onion at the bottom courtesy of Trev Wilson.
EMMA

Honestly what's he like eh Bob??? Go Trev!!!!
The BB's

Also ability to carry on playing when the guy in front has walked into a sign and stopped dead ramming your mouthpiece against your chops. Its ok I forgave you years ago Bob
pussycat

Koln ........... ah happy days. Work hard, play hard sleep if you have to and have Alarff.
Bobw

Wasn't my fault! Damned drummist in front of me did a quick side step around it at the last second! Sorry Anne.
ZedHorn

Bob, I've just read your list and I am in agony... tears of laughter all down my face - mascara everywhere.... you clearly now Cologne far too well...

PRICELESS mate... absolutely priceless!!!

and we do this for fun!!
Bobw

May I refer my honourable colleague to the answer I gave earlier - message #57 of the original Colognereunited site. I don't know if there is anywhere on this site to store the music files, so if you haven't got them you will just have to sign up with Yahoo groups, join Colognereunited and grab them then do the following:

1. Turn up the central heating to maximum.
2. Wear your number one uniform (complete with thermal underwear).
3. Fill room with cigarette smoke.
4. Drink plenty of lager.
5. Turn the lights off, then arrange some bright torches to shine in
your face.
6. Play these songs at maximum volume.
7. Make up silly lyrics because you don't know the words.
8. Do a ridiculous and highly energetic dance.
9. After 45 minutes, rush outside, hop on a bus and go into town
(you may want to sit on someones knee on the bus and of course
remember to take your saxophone, trombone, bass drum or whatever
with you).
10. Go into a posh hotel and stand and wait in the reception area
for half an hour.
11. Go home and repeat the above until 3am.
12. Sit on the floor in your hallway drinking and laughing until 5am.
13. Go to bed for two hours.
14. Have some bread rolls for breakfast.
15. Repeat ad nauseum.
The BB's

don't forget the odd game of spoof!!

Bid fat hairy ditto !!!!!!!!!

Fantastic as this is, we have gone

One site would be good but I don't understand the IT implications. Dolly needs to add a 'too thick to comment but means well' button.
admin

If you want to close down the other one I would suggest you host all images on photobucket. The choice is yours. You could keep both going and invite the German members here as well. I don't know how interactive MSM Groups are.
ZedHorn

I forgot the MOST important attribute!!

The ability to tell hayuge fibs whilst getting off the bus!!!

"I'm not doing this again next year...."
Apricot

sounds like fun. What's the exact dates?????
Although I know I won't get picked cos I'm woodwind and I'm told millions of them go as regulars every year...
ZedHorn

there are NO gaurantees for anyone!!

It's technically a Heron gig which is now a massed band gig but anyone in Heron gets to go... big grin on my face! (thems the rules... )
The only other gaurantee this year is Ann Bebee who won the '2008 place on the bus' ticket in the raffle last year!
yes lots of regulars are woodwind, but they are also brass blowers and drummers too...
This year will be the 20th visit of the RNVB to Koln and so a big band is anticipated! Old and new, it'd never be the same without a few virgins.. we were all one once, and eventually the old stalwarts will have enough of a good thing and take a year off.. then again!!??

ZedHorn

Oh and we leave the afternoon of 30th January, it's a Wednesday, home the following wednesday but try take Thursday off too if you can! you'll need the sleep...
Apricot

cheers Zed

Yes it's definately off topic - but hey if people can't be bothered to start a new thread to chat about the up's / down / in's and out's of cologne - who am I to complain

I'll hae a rethink about the re-united site and let you all know :-)
Big Ted

Dolly Drumstick I'm disappointed, the pipes and drums will always find out where you've gone, so you cant hide this one

Who said about screaming when the pipes start up, think yourself lucky, I'm stood right next to them!!!
