Fleet band in 8's

Not something you see evryday of the week (Thankfully)- Fleet Band in Matelot's rig.
This was taken on the Argus' front lift in the Northern Arabian Gulf on the way back to Jebel Ali circa March '91

Not a Beret to be seen!
General Melchett

I know Bill, a big disappointment to a Beret aficianado like yourself. If it's any compensation we were wearing Corps belts!!!

Looks like he's got his hands full chatting up the "Bandy-come-Matelot at the moment Les... How rare....
Aaron Aardvark

He's actually twisting his arm and whispering " If you get him to step back 3 paces he will go down into the hold and we can all go for a little break"

How many seagulls shat into those bell ends/? Dodgy, playing on a ship I always found
General Melchett

Les,

They're two RN Officers in "Action Coveralls", I can't remember for the life of me who they were but they do seem to be very interested in Alan "Hammy" Ham's Bass playing..............

Aaarrrggghhhh Pussers stools. They were the absolute worse things ever to sit on and play your hooter. Chronic back ache was a certainty. I see one of the cornet holders was feeling the cold.......brrrrr.
General Melchett

Pussers stools alter your spine in a way that can only be replicated with a baseball bat and an angry man!
Martin Grace does seem to be a bit chilly - pussers JWH to the rescue!
MrJpig

How are your stools after PUSSERS LES??
lesbryan

Dont know cant stop on them long enough to find out
General Melchett

Andy, I was waiting for that, I just expected it to come from Aaron or Rab...... Congratulations on reaching a new low!
Aaron Aardvark

Huh! From now on I will only be a kind, respectful clean minded aardvark.
Hornblower

Aa first from the Aa Aa stable?

Is it a stable - or hutch, or what?

Stop ignoring me Dave...
Aaron Aardvark

who's Dave?
Co-admin

Dave, and the band of the Royal Dave and Davettes!
That, is a whole differnet story!
Aaron Aardvark

Deli......i think you need a theraeutic aardvarse polish.......it calms ones nerves better than overdosing on Lemsip
General Melchett

This photo was taken perhaps a month after the earier one. We had arrived eventually in Jebel Ali in the UAE (30 miles north of Dubai) and Mick Goss had received a signal from the then CinCFLEET Jock Slater saying - "The war has finished - Where is my Band?" Off we got and sat on the quayside, Crab Air rang to say no move for 4 days - too late, the ship had foxtrot oscared. So down we sat and waited (Hurry up and wait - how familiar!) Eventually our man at the embassy rocks up and says sorry Gents no accomm, no barracks - Silence appart from groans all round. We could perhaps put you up in the Dubai Park Hotel, it is 4*, got it's own Golf course etc, is that OK? Needless to say we didn't think too long about it. However, Mick Goss did have the truley unenviable job of apologising for us to all the hotel's patrons for being a little bit unruly! Bless him, we were monsters and he stuck up for us no end.....

General Melchett

And lastly, the day we flew home. The day previously we had done a B/R for HRH Princess Anne in Abu Dhabi, unbeknown to us it would be the last time Green Berets were worn by the Band Service. Mick Goss and the "Boot Boys"

Yes Jos, Service life can be so tedious at times...but someone's got to do it I suppose...

Now what about the "unruly" pics. mate..???...
Hornblower

Good point Rab!!!

Is that Tom Plum at the front? He never made Sergeant, did he?!!
General Melchett

It is Tom Plum Stu, and as far as I know still resident at the Ruislip RBL!
RAB

Stuey..I, like you was amazed to see "3 Stripes on my Plummer"...

Mind you, even my old mate Taff Ryan made Cpl....

General Melchett

Good point - well made

AND he was a horn player!!!

Not many J or SNCOs came from the ranks of the horns - is that still the case?

(Notwithstanding The General of course!)
General Melchett

Stu, Stu Waite was the last Horn holding Bandmaster. He was Chief Instructor when I was in the wing.
10 years ago we did an MFM and I was the only horn player with rank on it - out of 15 Horns on the gig there was only 1 Cpl. Only Neil Silvester was a Sgt at the time but not on the gig.

Today there is / are:
1 x CSgt
2 x Sgt's
8 x Cpl's
10 x OR's
bootybandy

Our own Townsergeant was a SNCO Horn Player.....
townsergeant

Give that man a recommend!

In Plymouth, Brian Short called me BDCPL WEF.

(On DRO's, it said Musician BR Walker is promoted to BDCPL WEF 24th February 1982!)

The horns get respectable - about time too...

...I got three hooks, but they were upside down. (And on the wrong arm)
Dan A

What do you mean did Tom Plummer make Sgt...... Tom was a star and still is..... he was without doubt the man that held the Fleet Corps of Drums together as a Cpl when the WNB was in charge!! Tom may not have looked the part all the time.... but he certainly was good at his job.... APOLOGIES!!!! to Tom Plum please..... Bulger loyalties like grudges go back a long way!!!

Lets hope Tom does not get on here he will out sarcasm everyone!!

Dan
bootybandy

Tom was indeed a very professional man Dan. A very good Bugler and solo drummer. Had the pleasure of living next door to him in Ruislip along with Ron and the kids. BBQ's there were fun also. Although the Night Nurse never made an appearance there.

He must have re-invented it then Mark.. It was well on the go at FOSNI in the early 70's mate.. ..And I have to admit it used to get right up my nose...
FFoglamp

Rab, me too. But I was constantly "zipped" by either Oshker, or Tom Plum. Such non stop overkill, I was brainwashed into thinking Tom Plum invented it. It was like a virus he brought to Chatham with him. Luckily it had had its day by then.

Anybody else had any bad ZIP experiences ?

FFoglamp

Started What???
RAB

FFoglamp wrote:

'Fraid not Mark..Plum was but a blemish on the end of Little Jack Horner's thumb when the ZIPPING..started. OK here's the boring history.

The "zip" sound is meant to replicate the sound of you being reeled in by a "fisherman", meaning you had "bitten" on a loaded remark..e.g. Terry Freestone was a Colonel..You reply.."No he wasn't.....ZIP...you've bitten... .....

It was obviously later used when a repetition took place, but that's where it started me old matey...
Aaron Aardvark

ZIP!!!
