Hi Magsmag! Welcome to the forum, hope to see you at one of our vollie bands (Collingwood's the best, obviously... the rest of us liquorice stick tootlers will be quite happy to squeeze another chair in!)

Welcome magsmag, glad you have found the RNVBs forum. Glad to see Chrissie B has already pulled you up a chair at Collingwood. It makes sense as you live that side of the Pompy lake. Hope you have fun making music.

Get yourself along to Collingwood, think of the free music lessons and the chance to march on God's golden acre again!

We're a nice lot at HMS Sultan too, though noone else seems to have internet apart from me. I'm sure you'd be made very welcome by our wood-lickers if you came to try a rehearsal or two and see what you think.

Yes, I went. No I didn't enjoy it. You won't see me next week.
Unfortunately I left at half time. I lack confidence. Nothing wrong with the band or the people, just me.

don't give up - that's the worse thing you can do... go back, keep chugging along the odd note here or there and by christmas you'll be jingle belling with the best of them.....
if everyone in a volunteer band who couldn't play all their dots didn't go anymore - we wouldn't have any bands - me included!!!
go back...... and let the BBs look after you - once she BB has looked after herself!

Have to agree with that, confidence isnt exactly the problem, but more that i dont read music, make lots of it up as i go along usually, but above all i have a laugh!
And hey, whats the worst that can happen? You will get better and more confident!

Sorry you didn't enjoy it, but please don't give up on band - it gets better! (It was a bit crowded on Monday - I finished up playing in another section...) The first couple of times I went along I only managed to play a couple of notes before getting completely lost (and one of them was wrong). But it doesn't take long to get into the swing of things (Honest!) and once you get to know people you'll gain in confidence too.
Remember the motto: Right or wrong, make it strong - If in doubt, blast it out! Good luck with your grade!

When I was first learning to play (none of us ever stops learning) and the first time I sat in a band that could actually play I pooped myself. Managed the first note on a couple of numbers and that was about it. Imagine my delight when after a few weeks I managed the first and last note and actually managed to follow the music(ish) in between. Please come back before next year and remember you can't get any better without playing as much as you can. Hope I'll be back next week and hope to see you x

I still get delighted if I manage the first & last notes - regardless of what I'm playing!!
Do give Collingwood another go, they're a nice bunch. Or come and sit with us at Nelson as our clarinet section isn't as good (well I keep having to play, it can't be that great!!!)

Sorry to hear that things didn't go so well on rehearsal nigh, I wouldn't give up though, everyone struggles at first and it is all about confidence, meeting new people and worrying that you are going to do things wrong etc... I apologised to my first ever VBI the minute I walked in the door - I was scared stiff!!!
Panic not if you get it wrong, I remember an ex-VBI at Seahawk, picking up a bass and getting lost and Mark, our VBI, bless him gets lost sometimes too - but we have a laugh about it and start again!!! I made some glaring mistakes in my solo in a concert the other week, in front of the commodore of the base, but you sort of cringe to yourself and smile at the end!
It would be such a shame to give up and its like riding a bike, you have to get on again and carry on. Good luck with whatever you chose to do though!!
