HMS Ark Royal

Will this be Ark Royal or THE Ark Royal as in 'squirt planes off the front Ark Royal?'
Co-admin

Pusser,
it is this one...

or this one...

Anything called HMS Ark Royal
Aaron Aardvark

is there anyone old enough to remember this one?

[][/img]
FFoglamp

I served on two of them.........but not this one.

FFoglamp

Actually I am not a trekkie, but couldn't resist finding that one.

Anyway, about the 2 Ark Royals i was on, and the 2 Rasher Bacons ???

I first went on the Ark Royal (1) in 1977, when as a green sprog (still am), DOM at FOSNI (TF) gave me a 24 hr notice pierhead jump to chopper out to the Ark on the Moray Firth to dep for Rasher Bacon (1) who was temporarily sick. Didn't know the band, never been on ship, and had never been to..............HAMBURG.

HAMBURG Stories - too numerous / too funny / would need censoring

(may tell all one day when in the mood. You know who you are).

I think it may have been geoff comber who looked after me one eve ?

Anyway, i was only there for a three week stint before TF called me back to Caledonia, on the last possible day the Ark was in range.

But....here's a photo. I need you all to identify everyone in it.
[][/img]

Actually, I don't think I've missed anyone, correct me if I'm wrong, but there was a couple of chefs, and naafi guys in there (how else could we be endlessly supplied), and.........

Trickle Waterfield - top left. (his face looks good if you go close up and invert - Deli can you do this? !!!)

Dick Stapleton - with flies open (as usual)

Ian Ashton

Hammy

An Usher

Brian Twink Starr

Within the middle bit is me being suffocated by Tim Smye Rumsby, Colin Brown, Mac McDermott, Geoff Comber, Les Sheppard, John Whelton (Boss), Mac Magill, George Tate, Gilly. so anyone I've missed?

By the way in this photo - is George the only one still serving ?

Mark (Bids)

P.S - Dits from Ark Royal (2) coming soon !!!!!! (and Rasher Bacon 2)
Co-admin

Almost impossible mate, you are looking at hours of hard work to do something like this... software that is not invented yet and a guru of Yoda's skills to even think about that
FFoglamp wrote:

DOH
I think George must be the only one serving...
GeoffComber

Hiya Mark ! Loooong time no see.
That was possibly the NORTIEST run-ashore I ever had..................So bad I even denied it had happened at all later ! Didn't help my street-cred though............ Do you know , I've still got that Fleetwood Mac tape you got for me ? How sad is THAT !
I think both the Sharps should be in there somewhere , I wish I could remember the guy with the ginger hair's name , he had a brother who went in the Greenjackets along with Tosh Toye. Turner ?
Co-admin

No, I can't... no, I shouldn't... No, I won't...
GeoffComber wrote:

Phil (Gilly) Gilbert

Hamburg

Hi Guys

Well, what can we say about Hamburg ? Nothing on this site i don't think !
Happy days eh ? I think we should all get in touch with Rev Hitchins and, ask him to say a little prayer for us, what do you all think guys ?

Take care

Gilly.

I think some are beyond saving

A prayer would help some but most will need... a miracle or three!
FFoglamp

The photo

Gilly..............the photo was taken the night of yours and Hammy's birthday (it says so on the back of the phot).

Both you and Geoff are absolutely right, we can't say anything about that trip, mainly because we were all so quiet and sensible types ?????

Anyway, speak soon, mates.

Mark
bootybandy

Chosps.
There is one or two guy's names that are missing from the picture of Gillys and Hammys Birthday Bash, and that's Geordie Renwick (Bugler) directly under Rog Waterfirelds head, and also Richard "Taff" Clarke, (honorary Badger, French Horn Holder extraordinaire) he's just to the left and rear of Mac McD. I also remember the names of two of the chefs in the phote. Gerry Arthur, middle left, big smile, and also Frenchy. He's the guy hanging down from the bunk on the left with his finger in the assistant NAAFI manager's ear. From what I remember Frenchy had a little more than that in him on another occasion which led to him being drafted outside!!!!!! This phot was also taken in the "Glamour Gulch"! 2KA4 Mess as I remember. Nice to hear from you Bidd's, are you still supporting those Scummers!!!!!!....
FFoglamp

Yes, still supporting scummers, languishing in the depths of "division 2". Still someone has got to do it, as well as the current PDM !!!

So, booty bandy, I am leaving messages everywhere on here for you. Please, get back to me.

I think I know who you are now. There can't be that many who know everyone on the 2KA4 gilly birthday bash photo, and have Mac's Xmas medley demo tape. This probably means that you have put up with me for a fair part of your career.

Let me identify you with one clue word from Ark Royal 1977: "whip" ?

Take care

Bidds
bootybandy

Sorry "Whip" means nothing to me........ Keep trying.....Booty :O)
bootybandy

I'm trying to remember that young Bandy who threw up his brekkies in front of THE Commander (Beano) on the Ark when the Bootneck Band were performing for Colours in the 70's, A young man by the name of COMBER springs to mind.....Yuck.........Booty :O)
Hornblower

Just as a matter of interest, Hammy's birthday is the 11th December. How do I know? I was with him last week - and his wife ("I'm never gonna get married me") and 2 girls, 12 & 10 (ish).

(He don't look anything like the Ham in the picture - bald as a coot he is.)

Hornblower wrote:

drat.........I thought I was in with a chance there. At my age, you get what you can. 'Hornblower' sounded an interesting proposition.
bootybandy

Stu Baby. I thought you were married. I know that you said you always preferred women with small B**bs. Is that still the case......?....Booty :O)
Co-admin

A pulse is preferred...
bootybandy wrote:

optional but prefered
bootybandy

So, Small B**bs and a pulse, my, you have changed...Booty :O)
Hornblower

LOL!

Yeah, you're dead right Boots, I do like 'em small - good ol' memory you got there!

As a small point of interest - I was quoting Hammy above when I said: ("I'm never gonna get married me")

He was adamant that he'd never get married and now has 2 girls to his credit, I met them just before Christmas too.

Anyway, I'm getting married (for the 4th time) in Prague next month, so you were right about me being married too!!!
Damn...

(And yes Booty, in answer to your as yet unasked question, they are...)
bootybandy

And a pulse ??????...Booty :O)
GeoffComber

Oh dear oh dear , what long memories we do have. The 'chunk-blowing 'incident was at colours in Gibralter I believe, following a very active (and I must confess , somewhat blurred) night at various establishments. I think we wound up at the Hol e in The Wall .
Beano was actually quite impressed he said he'd never seen anyone chunder at attention before ( I was actually just trying to miss my boots.....).
It was all them JCs that did it !
bootybandy

You were lucky I could remember that one Geoff. I normally ended up in a little cell of my own and missing Colours. Twice I was a visitor to the Gib Jankers. Not all my fault you understand. I blame Goldy (God Bless Mate) and Gilly for getting me into trouble on the two ocassions. In fact I have a claim to fame of being on the last RAF Comet out of Gib. I shouldn't have been of course, but the Ark left without me as I had a date with a Magistrate which I couldn't possibly wriggle out of.....Nice to hear from you mate....Booty :O)
GeoffComber

I wish I could work out who you are !
Hornblower

Have a good look around the threads Geoff and you'll find out it's the one and only... oops gotta go.....
GeoffComber

Ha ! Got 'im ! (plus confirmation via PM's Cheers Mark 'n Aaron) How are you Twink ? The clue was the bit about always being got into trouble by Gilly ? Then I remembered a certain duo getting into hot water when they paid 'Appy 'Ermes a visit one day..............mind yer fingers Royal !
bootybandy

Aw that's cheating that is Geoff. Ah HMS Herpes, yeah Gilly and I got about a weeks 9's for that little incident. I could never deliver a decent Irish accent, and giggling going back down the Gangway was a bit silly. Ah well, all part of lifes rich carpet. Nice to hear of some of your exploits in the junior service Geoff. Keep posting....Booty :o)
geordie

how can anyone forget john whelton The bandmaster. Ithemk the ginger guy was the chef who used to bring 9 o clockers up to the mess. does anyone remember up harbour night when we all ended up on commanders table.
bootybandy

There was even a Subbie in the loft with that party Geordie. If I remember rightly we used to have about three friendly chefs. The Ginger haired guy was Mick Robb, there was also Frenchy (Don't mention NAAFI Manager and oral $ex) and a Welsh guy called Gerry Arthur. All gave excellent food, even in harbour back in Guzz we used to have Fillet Steak and chips. Good times indeed......
geordie

mess deck party

found this in the loft, same party I think. Twink eating as usual

bootybandy

That was either my birthday or I was having a shave and put cream on my face so that the cat could lick it off. Hammy is looking a little Sheepish with my creamy hands all over his head!!!!
geordie

Hi Twink, I think this was a start of another long night. Some of the best runs ashore ever. Remember Naples?. I have other blackmail photo's if required
geordie
bootybandy

Naples.....ah yes....Those 'kin smelly coats we bought when it was raining. I think they were made out of Camel poo. They sure did stink.
geordie

I gave mine to the old man for xmas, he wore it down the clud and got thrown out because of the smell.
