Hopefully not too stupid a question!!Hi
I hope that this isnt a stupid question - if it is please forgive my ignorance and have a laugh on me!
Anyway our colonal always tells us that the only stupid question is the one that isnt asked so here goes.
Please can you tell me the official name of the tiger and leopard skins worn by the bass and tenor drummers in a marching band, only I am trying to source some for the cadets and am not having much luck with the obvious searches ie tiger skin!!
I am wondering if there is a proper name for these items that would assist me in my quest.
Also if anyone knows a place to get these at a reasonable price or better still has any old ones they could donate that would be better still.
Thanks for your help
you can stop laughing now.

I'm no expert, but I think real ones are very hard to get hold of ('cos they have to be antiques - don't they??? someone more knowledgable help me out here....), but you could make pretend ones. That's what we did to go to America - after all it wasn't worth trying to get all the paperwork sorted to prove the real one was genuinely ours/old etc. and I'm guessing it would probably be much cheaper too.

Proper tiger/leopard skins are almost impossible to get hold of and accordingly, extremely expensive.
I'm not aware of any special name for them!
If you want imitation ones then I suggest you try either Potters of Aldershot (who I don't think have a web site) or check out Corporate Stix and see if they can point you in the right direction
Good luck!!!!

We have to use fake animal skins now. Most of the real ones we had were donated by Zoos or from private collections going back years. They don't have a name that I am aware of apart from the pet names the lads who wear them give them.

We got Heron's tiger from Longleet Safari Park- not a joke. We bagzied it when it was alive then bought the skin when it died (from natural causes). We then had to send it to a Taxidermist in Edninburgh plus do loads of legal stuff like pay for a death certificate which goes to gigs to proove it died from natural causes in captivity. It cost a few thousand in the end and that was about 15 years ago.

What did you use to make yours, I was thinking a rug but am nnot sure if it will be too thick
I was wondering if it may be possible to buy some tiger skin material (fake of course) and try to shape it

I also play Tenor Drum in a jock band and they have just spent £300 ish on second hand fake fur tiger skins (for the Base Drum & 2 Tenors) - and they look hellish! I think they belonged to a youth band?? They are made from fur fabric with a red felt lining which have been cut in to a similar shape to a sheep skin rug, except the one for the Base Drum has got a 'teddy bear' head with green plastic eyes. They look really cheap and tacky and I was embarassed to wear it. My uniform cost me over £1000 and that was just for the 'noz 2s' so it was a shame to spoil it will dodgy dead teddies!
Having said that, I have seen fake fur tiger skins which looked ok as a bit of thought went in to them. I suppose it's just a matter of taste. Good luck

Quite right too Gromit!
BRNC band at Dartmouth are probably still using the one procured from there in the late '70's.
So - if it's good enough for the RMBS...

This was borrowed from HQ Northwood for the USA trip. Taking a real fur accross the atlantic is not easy and best avoided if possible. There are good immitation cats out there, but I am no expert. Sorry.
