Ideas for the Volunteer Band forum Ranks?OK Guys, your forum, your ideas!
I'll be setting up some custom avatars for you in your new home featuring crests of the various bands. It is your choice if you use them.
I would like to see you take your section of the forum on to bigger and better things. Anyone interested in being moderators please let me know!

I am personally still quite offended at the whole saga that has evolved over the last few days.
In the world of my space and facebook there are many ways in which we can communicate with each other. The bigger picture of the forum as it was was a unique opportunity for prospective and currnet members to understand - or try to have some insight into the lives and times of both full time RMB life and what more often than not proves to be full time bandlife as an RN Volunteer.
I have considered many people I have got to know on here as friends, some of you have PMd me medical advice which I have thought nothing of helping out with. I know the diversity of the members of the Royal Naval Vollunteer Bandsmen and women adds to it's unique and addictive charm. As a woman with a brain in her head - athough not always given credit for it.. I would have thought that more people would have also seen the tongue in cheek nature of current 'banter'.
Post festivalness is just that. Bambara is our MFM, it's our Lord Mayors Show, Passing out parade, band service reunion all rolled into to one hayuge day - and weekend away at our own expense!
Such a shame that them and us now exist, depsite your kind words to the contrary deli - I do believe that is what is now created and the unique and fabulously entertaining interaction between Vollies, serving and ex RMBs is now over. What happens to the likes of the wannabees, the fans and the groupies who have become regular posters - they are not them nor are they us...
Just my opinion, but unless voiced is worthless..
As to ranks, start with clarinets and move forward in marching formation!!
see - humour!

They will be just as welcome on either of the forums as anyone else is, excluding nobody. I want the Volunter Bands to be seen as a seperate entity in their own right, to be able to dicuss their affairs in their own forum and join in on either forum as and when they like. A meeting place where you can even discuss and plan Cologne etc. With your own moderators who know your own people much better than we do you will be able to have usergroups for different events with private access areas as and when they are requested/required.
It has been mentioned by a lot of people that the forum takes forever to scroll down to find their particular interest ad to click the 'View posts since last visit' tag often throws up several pages of things that don't interest them when they have been away for a while and playing catch up is near impossible. The forum I used to Mod on had a similar problem. All I wanted to read about was one of the many subjects on it and when I went away for a week and then went back on, I had to go through page after page and gave up in the end.
The whole rationale behind this move is streamlining the process for everyone. The new forum will have its own agenda. The RM band forum is about the RM band, and a place for its members and ex serving members to reaquaint themselves with people who like their music. Perhaps not everyone will be in favour of the change but I'm sure given time the Volunteer Band forum will be just as popular as the Royal Marines Band forum attracting more members from the volunteer bands. It will be able to grow organically and develop its own style and areas. I have a few ideas of the way I want it to go but rely on the members of the RNVBA to take it where they want it to go. I am merely a facilitator and will be an active member on both forums.

I can see the purpose behind this and I hope it works out rather than killing the forum - which is a risk when this kind of thing happens.
I'd volunteer as a mod if anyone wants but knowing how my sense of humour often doesn't seem to come across too well if folk don't think it sensible I won't be offended!

Thanks for your hard work as always Deli
I don't know if it's possible but instead of rankings that change with post count, could it be set so we can choose a section of the band to be/instrument played? We could keep the flashy balls to change with post count though cos, well, they're shiny!

I'm going to be adding some optional titles for people to use such as: the band they are in and now the section / instrument played that will appear in profiles and posts. I was also thinking of adding the Karma hack to this forum. I don't think the other site would like it but it does work when we have a younger membership.

I'm with you on this on Zed.
I've made my points already, so I shan't repeat myself.
Hopefully we can make this work, but I shall miss the contribution from those RM's who didn't take offence to our presence, simply because they had nothing else to moan about that day.
However, I shall not miss the hypocrites who complain about thread hijacking and swamping of areas.
Again, hopefully we can make the best of the situation, but I don't envisage the rift being resolved by sepearting us further.
|
Anne Picc
|
Think I must be missing the point really. Nothing has changed apart from the two sites being on different addresses. We can still post on RM threads and they can still post on ours. Links are available to get easily between the two and I'm sure people on both sides of the camp who are interested will swap between the two. So I'm not sure how this will resolve the issues but at the same time, I don't understand the upset at the change. Upset at the situation that has given rise to it I can understand, but I can understand both sides of the arguement too. I'm sure I'm missing something, but don't know what! Please someone feel free to explain - I'm probably being really dim!
Anyway, can anyone tell me why I'm coming up as 3rd clarinet and how do I change it? Being a picc player, I'm just not used to having any part of an instrument in my mouth so am fairly sure I'd be a rubbish clarinet! .
As for the other issue - can't offer my services as moderator I'm afraid. Too new on the site, have probably irritated people already, not sure if I'll continue on it (will wait to see how things settle - I get enough angst in the rest of my life!) and really can't commit the time at the moment. Thanks admin, and anyone else involved, for all your work though. Not quite what you had planned for your weekend I'm sure!

You've just about got it Zed. No bass Sax? You sure? I invented it last night so there is now a Bass Sax. Like I said, the rank structure was made to show people's progress as they post. If you don't like it, I can delete it. I'll be developing this site further and will remove the adverts when I see it is being used and successful. I removed the adverts from another forum once before (having personally paid £100 to have it moved to another server and £40 to have it advert free) for it all to fall flat on its face and not be used. Once bitten twice shy...
If there are emoticons that are missing please let me know and I will add them. If you want more I can fill the emoticon box up with so many you'll be spoilt for choice. Like I said, you tell me and I'll do whay I can.

YAWN!!!!! - whathappened?!?!?!??!?!?!!?Who did that? Woke up after the weekend and it's all changed - YAY we have our own forum
This is what I originally wanted to start up with Cologne re-united, RNVB re-united etc etc when they first started in 2003 - but I just never had the time and I would personally like to thank all involved for the time and more importantly the resources that they have used to do it
Just a few thing - where are the drummers in the ranking system (sulks!!) and as to what instrument we all play - maybe with the volunteer bands and in some cases only!!! it should be instrument they carry
All the forums i.e bar, dit book etc -linked to the RM Band forum or are they seperate?
Is it possible to have a Drummers Grot as it would be good for us for sharing ideas, dots etc (oh and giving rich sh*t)
*****edit*****
Oh and you can get rid of the Official Announcements section labelled Gen Buzzes.............never heard of them in the RNVB it's all gash buzzes and here say LOVE YOU ALL
|
admin
|
You want me to rename the offical announcements section?
You want a Cologne forum?
You want the Drummer's practice room?
The ranks structure is just for fun and for those who missed Zed's proposal and her post indicating the instruments that are already in place for certain ranks... she is correct.

I intend to add custom profile fields that will show in your profile and under your posts that show the instuments you play and the band you are in, YOU will have to enter the details of course!
I will also be adding the Karma Hack when I've figured it out so you can award people karma points for being nice...

I admit I was a bit miffed when I first read about the changes last night, but I've had time to think (toys now safely back in pram!) and I understand the reasons for the changes. I'm glad, too, that we're not "banished" from the RM Band forum. My association with the RM Band Service goes back nearly 30 years and the forum has brought me back in touch with a lot of old friends (literally via email in some cases, and metaphorically via "dits" etc).
However, not all us RN Volunteers (or "VDs" as Mr JPig so charmingly calls us!) are wee girlies. So can someone please tell this "older" member wot the *&!? are the Karma hack and the Gender hack? (They sound like painful surgical procedures to me ... don't you put that hacksaw anywhere near my Karma, Dr Zed!)
PS Can I play the cello in this marching band please? Or the bongos?
|
greenfairy
|
Hacks are little tweaks made to the set-up of the forum that allow extra information to display such as the gender of the member, a flag showing nationality, karma points etc. Things which personalise & tailor a forum to those who use it.
The one nest thing about this new forum is that it's not (yet) been blocked by work!
|
Apricot
|
ooo bongos - cool.
Having not been online since last wednesday I'm a little mystified by the whole thing, probably because I like many others don't bother to scroll my way through the whole list of posts since last visit when I miss a couple of days - I'd never catch up. But I'm all for the change to see if it works better and makes members happier.
Am a little confused about exactly how it works though Deli - do we have to log into each site to post on each site and if we post on a thread that is on both sites does it appear on both sites?
Thanks.

Yes you do but your username (as you registered before yesterday) and passwords remain the same on both sites. New members will be able to register on both sites with different usernames if they choose to. This may be an idea for the VBIs who can wear both hats.
| Apricot wrote: | | If we post on a thread that is on both sites does it appear on both sites? |
No, sadly not. I did spend a long time investigating a 'common' database where there would be a duplicate area but the coding and administration would be a bit of a nightmare for all concerned.
I'm really pleased that some are now starting to see the benefits of this move. It really is for the best. The RNVBA now have their own identity and I will appoint Moderators as and when required. I will not be asking for people to vote on who is made a moderator, they will be appointed on merit and hopefully without upsetting anyone. I already have a couple in mind. VBIs will be moderators of each of their band's areas as they join. There will be mods for specific areas and overall mods who can deal with the entire forum. I really want you to make this forum a success and see it for what it is... yours!

Well, after having a nose round, I am actually quite pleased with this set up.
I have no doubt that we will all flit between the two (that's the RM's as well) and that the sites will eventually work well in tandem.
I hope this all works in practice Deli!

I was also feeling quite offended by all the palaver over what seemed to be nothing but spite. Toys thrown and dummies being spat!!!!
I do hope that RMs will use this if only to let us know that we are really still welcome on 'their' site.
Having said that it is also quite nice that we have our own area although I, and I think many others, considered the RNVB section as being ours.
Hope I've not upset anyone but needed to let off some steam as well.
One more thing are there any emoticons with trombone or cornets in them, cannot find any at present

I, like many others just maybe took things a wee bit too personally. So far so good on here and like the BBs just hope some interaction and cross pollination can still occur...
Oh and Dolly - drums do exist -bass and MSD just you have to post squillions of times to be one!! think of it as a compliment *ahem*

Ok - got 'rank' sorted now - now just need to make sure I'm always one behind Les BB - I know how much he appreciates having arguably one of the the loudest piccolos (when she wants to be) in the RN Volunteer bands playing top notes in Semper Fid and Eagle Squadron right behind him . Ooo - and there is always that top F trill bar 3 of Heart of Oak. What a wonderful headache cure that is!. That is one thing Zed - you may well be able to play the solo picc trio in Eagle Squadron amazingly well on French Horn, but my Picc will still reach places your Horn is just never going to get to

Before you do may I just say I'm also very pleased that this has worked out OK. Remember the 2 sites are designed to run in tandem. May I convey a big THANK YOU to Deli and also to Anne Pic (DA) who through this whole discussion has confirmed yet again the power of these forums by confirming the world really is a small place and that once in the music world it doesn't matter where you are, what you play or who you play it with, there is a common bond and friendship.
There have been a lot of toys and dummies hopefully now picked up cleaned and returned to their owners. I have my Teddy Bear (ask Anne) and I would just like to say enjoy your new home.
