If onlyI want my own band!
I've found a site that sells scores and I've fallen in love!
I have concert programmes whirring round my head.
I'd love to have my own band so that we could play the pieces I love every rehearsal,
there'd be no more bloody Italian Festival, that's for sure!
greenfairy
Yeah but you wouldn't get anyone to play in it cos you'd have your bloody love song thingy on every setlist
A
There is NOTHING WRONG with A Groovy Kind of Love. It is a GOOD ARRANGEMENT and the ending is NOT an anti climax.
If I actually wanted to annoy my whole (as yet imaginary) band, I'd play bloody Begweeeeen Festival or One Moment in Sodding Time every gig.
GKoL is under rated!
greenfairy
It's AWFUL!!!
A
Would you rather have Young Amadeus (bloody TRAVESTY) or Skataco then?
greenfairy
You don't have to compare it to other sucky pieces to try and find its worth
A
You know me too well.
My band-of-the-future had better like film music though.
And Vaughan Williams.
And clarinets
greenfairy
Counts me out then! (bar the film music)
But you probably only wanted good players anyway
A
Well, no. Enthusiastic people who don't mind buying their DOM lots of drinks and have a sense of humour. And a strict rule of no divas.
And what is wrong with Vaughan Williams?????????
A
I wonder if James Puresex and Jack Davenport play instruments and are looking for a band to play in?
Would make rehearsals more interesting.
greenfairy
I'm sure there's one thing they're good at playing!
*happy thoughts*

We need some more skin and essence in our band.

I don't need to find somewhere else to spend money!

It was a rather fascinating image you have to admit.

I got an image of an old drunk woman singing 'Tomorrow' from Annie with Melchy giving thunderous applause whilst sitting on a throne.

No, it was one of the Chinese girl costumes from the Mikado. Strangely!
I swear the heat has fried the little brain I had to begin with

In that case you're the first person I've ever met who pays any attention to the Jockanese Fairy.
A

HAHAHAHAHA.
Funnily enough, I have my own band!
I have been entrusted to organise and run the brand spanking new Portsmouth Uni Wind Band.
I have cash to spend on scores, and will conduct (scary, might need a few pointers. Jos????)
I can also open it up to anyone I want, not just students and staff.
I am so excited I just might burst!
*SQUUEEEEEE*
greenfairy

Oh dear gods
*goes to buy earplugs*
Can you play Sweeny Todd?! So I can sing along when I go stalking next year?!
A
How can you sing along with earplugs in?
greenfairy
Considering the state of my singing it's not going to make it any worse

I might be able to find a score. If you're nice. After all, I'm a DoM now!
Apricot, what time do you go to Salsa on Tuesdays, just out of interest?
A
Result!
"Don't worry too much about budget, A, just choose the scores you want and we'll order them for you!"
I sense a shopping spree approaching!
And no, Swinging Safari will not be on the list.

I go around 9 when I'm going, if you want to do the lesson it starts at 7.30pm I think (or it did last time I took a beginner down there - a certain absent oboeist, you know who I mean A)
Maybe we could all come and be your guess players every now and again!
Apricot
p.s. why?
A
Exactly why you thought, guest playing.
As staff/student you'll be invited anyway Apricot, but it's open to anyone in Pompey over the age of 16, (although preferable 18 for social reasons.)
So actually, if you want to (and it'd help me no end) you can join full time. Both of you, especially if you want to play sax Apricot.

I sure would love it, only the rehearsals with be around 5.30 on Tuesdays and I'm not sure you'd make it after work? You may have to rush too much. But I shall definitely be inviting you to join in on gigs and such if you're available.
More the merrier.

You do know I can't actually play the sax properly don't you???
But if learning on the job is ok...???
or is that considered better than my clarinet playing!!!!

I can get out of most things if I try hard enough
A

No you can't.

Well I thought it might be a good idea for several reasons.
1) I've been told I shall be inundated with flutes and clarinets,
2) It'll be good practice for you for things like big band and then you can show off about being a double hander,
3) I'll need friendly faces around to support me and
4) I'll love you forever.

Well after doing a bit of research, nearly all Uni's have wind bands, and they're all popular and successful.
One claims it has 100 players.
They all run similarly to what I have planned.
No auditions, all standards welcome.
Open to all including members of the public.
A modern light repertoire with the odd classic thrown in.
Early rehearsals,
and of course - regular drinking sessions.
Apricot
Yep, I was in a wind band at uni, it was good fun and I still keep in touch with a fellow player from all that way back.
Mostly people start on the back stands and work their way forward, depends ing on ability of course.
You're probably right, I could do with the sax practice for big band. Ok sax it is.
I won't have to pay will I?
Apricot
Hey GF, you could play sax with me too???
A
Of course not, I'll have enough money from the budget for the music I want.
You'll know most of the repertoire anyway to start with, I don't want to buy loads of pieces I don't know until I get used to being out front.
Apricot
Knowing a piece, or even knowing a piece on clarinet is a bit different to experimenting with sax, I'll probably need to take my little finger chart with me!!!
A
I'll copy out parts for you to take home too if you like.
Apricot
arh bless, but that would imply I actually did practice at home????
greenfairy
Aren't we just a wonderfully helpful bunch?!
Apricot

but yes, it might be a good idea. Thanks sweetie
A

GF, I've even seen a superior arr. of Phantom for you.
greenfairy

So I'm thinking that I'll stop being mean and say yes to playing in your band sweetie
A
AND DMC, not just CotBP!
greenfairy
I you!
A
I'm just bloody brilliant is all.
I may buy some scores just for me. Full sets for the band, (from the uni budget) and some conductors scores of pieces i love out of my own pocket to keep.

GF, listen to the audio file!

That's not actually too bad an adaptation. Apart from the Kraken into Davy Jones bit where the organ should be - sounds odd without it. And the ending is just WTF!

I quite like it.

Experimenting with sax is one of life's few remaining free pleasures...
And knowing where to put your fingers goes a long way to help, too.
