Marches from the past

Why do we never hear those wonderful Royal Marine marches anymore which were so much part of our life in Eastney in the sixties? I refer, of course, to 'Brass Buttons', 'Marching Through Georgia', 'Barcelona', 'Cavalry of the Steppes', etc.
I also remember back in 1957, as a recruit, a very foggy day at the Depot in Deal when we were being inspected by the RSM and the band, which we could hardly see through the mist, was playing 'Over the Sea to Skye' - it was very moving and evocative.

Fred
Hornblower

Hmmmmmmmmmm, can't really answer that one mate as I left the mob in 1984.

I reckon they still are played - though you hear newer marches mixed in with them.

I enjoyed listening to HM Jollies when the band were on Horseguards earlier on in the year.
General Melchett

I can assure you Fred that Cavalry of the Steppes is alive and well, news of it's demise has been greatly exaggerated! As are many of Col. Neville's marches still alive and well (Shrewsbury Fair, On Parade)

As for Brass Buttons and Barcelona..............
Hornblower

And Barcelona (surprised you remember that one mucker!) was penned by Peter Sumner DoM.

Wicked horn part in the trio!!!! Beats fecking off beats - but not on the cobbles of Barcelona itself!!!!!
Fred

Thank you Hornblower and General Melchett for your replies.

These marches were particularly good to march to and, while there are many new ones which are equally as good to the (untrained) ear, it would be great to hear on disc all the old ones regularly used by the Corps in the fifties and sixties.

Thank God HM Jollies is still played each time we (I mean you!) Beat the Retreat on Horseguards. Was there ever a better march written!!!

You know us sailors have never been accused of being able to march....
General Melchett

Navy Blue..... Trevor Brown's March

Did you know that Doddy had some words made up about that and an "incident" in Gibraltar?
Aaron Aardvark

I'm saying nothing You and Les should get together for a Jolly Swagger.

Standard of St George has one in mine......first march I played on the March with the Junior Band
General Melchett

That's funny Andy - It was the first one I played, and I flaming hate it!
MrJpig

Spoken like a true horn player
townsergeant

I love anything by Sousa, with a 'stinger' on the end!
Comfortably Numb

I have long thought that there is a section of the Bandmasters Course that taught prospective DOMs that "Despite what the Public want, bore them to death with Shostakovich".

Imperial Echos was my first march. Got hopelessy lost (not geographically speaking - the band were all there around me) and all I had to do was play effing um-chugs.

Ahhh..Yes Stu.. You took the words straight from my mouth mate..

I never tire of listening to just about any of KJA's marches, but that one in particular gives me great pleasure. It was even interesting for the "oompah brigade" to play..
FFoglamp

We marched on to Army of the Nile, at my first taste of Earls Court - Silver Jubilee Royal Tournament 1977 ? Remember........
Mr Bass Trombone

Lets not forget some good old oldies like Eagle Squadron, Blue Devils,Light of Foot, and a real oldie The Red Cloak. One that will always remain as a fave with me is The Thin Red Line, I can never forget hearing Sir Viv saying in the early sixties Sing to yourselves the first two bars the words nippy nippy ninetynine and you will never rush this phrase, and this of course was before you buy a ninety nine as an ice cream.
Adios Mi amigos. Soon be bar leaning time.
Pax80

my first was "On The Square"

up and down North Barracks in the early morning... wondering how to hold the damn horn still, follow the music and the guy in front while my part was being played by the snare drum anyway !!

Know how you felt - of course.

On the square (Cinque Port music part as I remember which made it even harder to read ) was the 2nd piece I played!!

D'ya know what? I think you're wrong there me ol' mucker - sorry.

I only did one RT and it was that one. And I distinctly remember the march on piece it was "Blaze away"

How do I remember it so well?

'cos on the last night I went on with the march Blaze away blazing away in my lyre that's why!!

Another thing I remember about that RT (being my only one in 15 years - gloat) was childish people putting plastic cups over Aa Aa's collectibles (ball tops). (I'm not joking when I say that I didn't indulge in this game).

The massed drum majors ordered it to stop, but people (like me) didn't worry too much about it and if anyone had put a cup there - that's where it stayed.

I got bawled out by a couple of massed drummies at the end of one display - my defence was that I didn't know it was there (I honestly didn't, 'cos I hadn't checked and I must admit - that bit was deliberate.)

So you can guess the next massed order that was given - everyone was to check their ball tops before marching on. :smt046 :smt046

So, all you saw before we went on was loads of bandies checking for their naked ball top!!

Remember that Bids?

Such fun...
Pusser

I was in my school's Brass Band before I joined up (RHS - 'Bandy' Ernie Buckingham RM Rtd) and always enjoyed having a blow in the 'J' Wing Brass Band Club - Prof Hargreaves conducting - because you never really get over it do you? Still burn a candle for a damn good listen to Slaidburn!
Mr Bass Trombone

Pusser, When it comes t Brass Band Marches ya as to go a long way t beat BB&CF and Punchinello, lots of meat for big ends. But yes Slaidburn is ok.

No, Stuey I am right and you are wrong. We marched on to Army of the Nile, opened out and then into Sailing as the slow march.

We marched on to Blaze Away for the FINALE, which included Sea Shanties.

...and yes I remember the ball top thing, it must have been orchestrated by Aaron Aardvark !!!

How did you only manange 1 RT, I won 3 !!!

lesbryan

Two marches stick out in my mind one i dont know the title but it was the slow of the K.S.L.I .The other HEARTS OF OAK (everyday we marched to that)and numerous times since.
Hornblower

There was a wonderful gig that Chatham band used to get every year that happened to fall at the same time as the RT called Keiler Woche - you'll have seen it mentioned on Dogend threads. Unfortunately, this prevented us from attending Earl's Court, as much as we'd loved to have been there with you.
Hornblower

Oh - and I only did 1 Horse Guards too!!!
Pompey Rich

Voice Of The Guns. Now that march is awesome.
bootybandy

The best part of that march is the bars silence about eight bars in, when all you can hear is the sound of heel on parade ground. Oooooohhhhh......
bootybandy

There was also a Chatham favourite with Chris Taylor - Unter Den Linden....

sticky blue

it's the 4' 6" bent tube with a wide bit at the front that used to get you up in the morning and tell you when to turn the lights out and go to bed at night - along time ago -
Mr Bass Trombone

Marches at Cup Finals Match of the day and dont lets forget Horseguards 1970 massed band marching down the Mall to the England World Cup tune of that year Back Home. Burgalar Marches how about Mechanised Infantry or Delibellybad(Jellelabad)Silver Burgalars.Need good old fashioned marches with some umpf so Bass Trom can march behind the man with the big thingy round his neck so you can play half a beat behind him all the way round Chatham and Gilligham, he gets really annoyed if any one Knows were he is ask Rivs Howgill, or put a Bass Drummer out of step, this is dangerous though next countermarch bass drum stick gently in the B$&%£%"*

You shouldn't give plastic bags to children to play with
FFoglamp

Thank you for that guys.

The first march I ever played, marching on to Deal Parade ground for my first time was.................................................

THE MIDDY !!!

(and thats a really boring one).
Hornblower

I thought they were ALL boring to you 'Tenors'!
FFoglamp

Excuse me, but it was a good two years later I learnt to swing twigs around all day for no apparent reason.

When not in massed bands we were part time bulgers without the curtain tie backs.

(The Middy is still boring)
Co-admin

You are far too modest Ffoggy... part time bulger? I have it on good authority that you played 1st on many gigs and the bulgers played seconds!
We had fun on Divs playing the funnies as well

I think my favourite marches are the non- standards... Gibraltar is another one as well as Royal Salute. Dickie Waterer knew how to write a march for the bulgers to get into!
Pompey Rich

Back to bugle marches. What about 'ALLIED COMMAND' which has been revamped as 'LIONS OF TRAFALGAR'. Now this is an all time yet modern classic.
2nd Clarinet

Hornblower!!

Are you sure about your posting on 25 August

I seen to remember 'High School Cadets' being one of the first marches, if not 'the' first march, we (by we, I mean 3/69) played in the Junior Band at that time.
I can quite distincly remember people like 'Mogs' Capewell, in front of me unable to march and play and keep in line to the front and the to the side, all at the same time.
A trick we all learned eventually, well, nearly all of us.

I'm as sure about it as I'm sure about anything in my advanced years.

That'll be a resounding 'no' then.

You've sussed me - I made the whole thing up on the (golden) spur of the moment.

In reality, it may not have been the very first march, but I certainly do remember it as being one of them.

You're getting as bad as botty in calling my faded memory into question.

Just go with it and stop pointing out my inconsistencies - I'm doing my best....

(And - it was 1970 for crying out loud. How can ANYBODY remember such bloody trivia )

Go on - now call my memory into question again and tell me it was 1969.

(Is this a 5 minute argument or the full half hour?)

Some of our first term's marches in Jnr band were Men of Music, Warship, Semper Fid, Jollies plus a few more the grey matter has erased!
bootybandy

March of the Pacemakers was a particularly rousing March too.
Hornblower

Thanks for that Botty!!!
bootybandy

Que !!!
