most hated dots...

just for fun...mind you, hopefully not!!!
The Donkey

All of the above plus Highland Cathedral (or anything else with Doodlesackens for that matter) and definitely selections from My Fair, bloody, Lady
ZedHorn

there's always Shrek dance party!!! oh yeah!!!
Hornblower

Ahhhh the joys of off beats!!

I hadn't played in a wind band (what Military Bands are now called, apparently) for eons, but now play with aforementioned kids every other Saturday. As a responsible adult!!!

Because I love playing me 'orn in it's original context, i.e. orchestral, I had pretty much forgotten about off beats and the like (although long note city is now pretty regular - or TACET!)

Another part of orchestral playing (that I like) is the amount of newspaper reading you can get through whilst counting the odd 100 bars here and there.

Anyway, I'm rambling again (no Z - not dribbling on this occasion!) the piece I remember as most detested and waste of valuable horn resources is....

(and I think there's many a horn player who will agree with me...)

Night Flight to Madrid.

It wouldn't surprise me if there are other sections of the band who'd agree with me either. Wotacrap piece of music.

I'm sure many other pieces will be mentioned that I'll agree with too.
2nd Clarinet

.
Anything chosen by TF for a concert.

Astradyne

Glad to see the one that has the most boring alto sax part in the poll.

Note to composer/arranger - C# and D over the break are not the only notes we have, and the two worst notes we'd rather NOT be playing ALL the time.
ZedHorn

night flight to Madrdi... I'd forgotten about that little sh*tester that Rasher made us play.... just offbeat over load... burn it at the source I say!
A

I absolutely detest Skataco, but any brass band music (if I wanted to join a brass band, I'd learn to play a brass instrument!!!!!!)

Also, HMS sodding Pinafore.
EMMA

As an Plymouth Argyle fan, there is no way that I could ever loathe Semper Fidelis, it shall be blasting out around Home Park next Saturday for the 1st time since May and out the boys will run - Come on you Greeeennnnnsssssssss!!!

On the subject of dots then....... The Beatles - that is a dire dire piece!!!!
pussycat

Highland Cathedral gets my vote.
ZedHorn

No 2 you disappoint! how can you not like that piece.. think of the memories... camel on back, beer in belly, horn in hand, feet and knees aching from stupid dance routines, can't hear a bl**dy note your playing for all the doddlesackens!! (thanks for that one Donkey) that tune IS Koln...

secretly a little bit of me loathes it too though!!
pussycat

Yes for all reasons given above it's sooo flammable.
Perhaps some Scots pinewood kindling will get it going?

The joy of Koln is that you can't remember playing it the other 7 times!

you clearly were more drunk than even you remember if you think we only played it 8 times... it's 8 per night never mind how many on the hoof aswell!!
and that doesn't include the early morning 'tuning up' sessions they have outside the digs.. hence they had their own block this year!! (well done Dave!)
greenfairy

I think I must be more insane than I thought I was. I like Italian Festival and I like Highland Cathedral.

Must dash, I think I hear the men n white coats at the door.......
Astradyne

I started liking 'Voice of the Guns' and 'Army of the Nile' ... and I thought marches weren't meant to be tunes that were to be liked.
Wee Mac McDrums

I'm with you Astradye!

Army of the nile!!! I think it's great

I could also be pesuaded not to play Highland Cathedral south of the Watford Gap....

The people there just don't appreciate good music that makes you tingle (lol)

That ain't fair on those of us who do like it though....or are you telling me I should just move north instead and save those with no appreciation for the tingles?
Apricot

Ok Fairy you are not alone I like the Italian & Beguine festivals and Highland Cathedral (as long as it's not played too often), but I also like Marvin Hamlish and Army of the Nile. On the other hand could happily live without Pinefore and the vast wad of other brass band music...but my all-time piece I love to hate (sorry A cos I know you love it) has got to be A Groovy Kind of Love.
greenfairy

I'm with you on GKOL - remember I actually hid the pack at one point! Alas, A found it again. Next time I'll just burn it instead
EMMA

I am loving a march we are doing at the moment, so much that I can't think what on earth is called, March of the Nobles or something as I get to whack a triangle the whole way through!!!! Its fab.........

Oh and I do play a triangle better than you Al!!! So there!
Quasijock

Anything that was originally written for Orchestra/string ensembles pre 1930 and any musical "Joke"
Astradyne

I'm not liking 'Toccata...' - don't get me wrong as I do like Bach, but I'm not liking this concert band arrangement of a prog rock version of a Baroque piece!

I know Kevin Lamb may have had good intentions with this arrangement, but it does nothing for me.

Agreed, Wind band arrangements of the old "classics" are generally pants
ZedHorn

Army of the nile is written by the god of Marches Sir kenneth Alford.... DO NOT try and burn anything written by his fair hands or you shall perish in a hell hotter than abduls vindaloo!
ZedHorn

oh... and even as a French Horn player.... brass bands are fab... but wind band arrangements of brass band dots can be a little dubious... agreed!

Never liked Major Frederick Rickets, however Holyrood wasn't bad. ;
Sir Vivien Dunn was the best marchist ever. Richard Waterer wasn't bad either
Astradyne

I presume this haunting ditty has never had the marching band arrangement treatment to be slow marched to (and no, it's not Strawberry Switchbade again!):

And the prize is a lifetime's supply of air if you can remember the presenter's name. And you'd probably know that if you skived off school in the '70s and '80s.

Astradyne

Young AmadeuszzzzzzzzzZZZZZZZZZZZZZZzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz........

How BORING is that?

Wake me up at the best bit - when it's finished.
Anne Picc

Mamma Mia definately! Sorry Mark. Oh and ANYTHING that has anything to do with Christmas until at least October. Can't agree with you on Seranade though Emma - I like lots! I'm sure someone in the band will like Mamma Mia - I'll help you seek them out if you want
EMMA

Oh that Christmassy thingy isn't that bad, not as bad as Serenade!!! Does anyone at Drake like Mamma Mia???? I haven't heard anyone yet!!!! Hee Hee!!!
ZedHorn

try the flumps...
A

Troika. The clarinet has something like 300 b's in a row. *snore*
EMMA

What was it again Mark????

Oh that thing that we have with that Wellington March in it, oh and behalf of another cornet player - I guess "The Blacksmith" too!!!!!

Mind you thought I did rather well on my own trying to get rid of "Share my Yoke" at the Festival!!!!
windypipes

How about the Toccata?
EMMA

Oh no I quite like Toccata..... NO MARK THAT DOESN'T MEAN WE NEED TO PLAY IT!!!! Merely saying that it is ok
Big Ted

Highland Cathedral.......Doodlesachens!!!!!!

You dont like Highland Cathedral, played by the Doodlesachens.............what is the matter with you!!!!

I love it........... its the best piece in the world and made even more so by the wonderful brass and woodwind accompaniment by my wonderful friends in the Volunteer Bands for whom I have so much admiration!!!!

Was that enough crawling......

You will all grow to love it again as Koln approaches....honest

Be warned, we know where you live and will come and tune up outside.........or even inside..........we dont care!!!

Big Ted
The Donkey

If any piper tries to go anywhere near my insides, I will not be held responsible for my actions !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
EMMA

Sorry but I feel that I may have to sneak that John Williams: Symphony whatever thing in here as well, see its so bad I can't think of its name!!! Sorry Mark
Chrissie B

Is that the Symphonic Marches thingy with all the Indiana Jones tunes? I LOVE that!
EMMA
