How times must have changed in a few years Bri..I used to drive into Pembroke proud as punch in my Ford Prefect with the driver's window down...I had to..The window was missing....
I paid £7.10 shillings for the car, and had to pay it in installments...

My first car was a Vauxhall Viva bought off Tom Gallagher for £95. It was an insurance write off due to a dent in the rear bumper.!!! It served me well until I traded it in for a Marina Estate from a garage in Dunfermline, Taggarts I believe it was called.

Mine was a Ford Escort 1300 GT which cost £300.......as I was a learner driver it cost me £350 to insure it 3rd party only.

Right ! You were lucky !
My first car was a Ford Escort Estate, bought with parental assistance for £200, and taken from Southampton to Deal as a learner driver, after leave. First journey, was with Bob Spiller sat next to me as the real driver, and Chris Davis in back. Got puncture near Eastbourne, and nearly late back. Imagine if we had been late back, got charged, and how this could have affected later careers ?

My first car was a beaten up Fiat 131 and it went and went and went. I did have to hit the starter motor with a lump of 4x2 to unstick it a few times until some nice old lady wrote it off outside the house.

It was dark blue, and made it up to FOSNI, first draft and all that with a full kit (drums).
It was at FOSNI that I matured to Mk III Cortina Estates, the first being metallic green, then the bright blue one. I'm sure you recall, Bri ? (1978-1981)
The cars went downhill after that.........the curse of Chatham ?
