Thats going on and off all weekend (I like going on and off if and when an opportunity rises - usually zero). Any how, started at top, spent half a day at coffee boat, and now arrived here, getting thus this far.
In answer to the original question, Where have I been ?
Absolutely nowhere !!! Just too busy to get time to go on the forum.
Now that has to be the biggest anti-climax answer ever. Perhaps you were expecting some spicy exotic story....but ...er....no !

Good 'Old' Dogends, first in the queue for anything. I think this was one of the first joint Fleet/Stsff Band Mil Trg weeks somewhere in East Kent.
I honestly really liked those weeks camping, no S%$t.
Dave Smith always seemed to run the stores tent along with 'Gunner' Yates.
How many of us remember the good times spent down at Lydden in the old ammunition store turned pig farm!!!!!!!

Spent most of the time at Lydden trying to hide in a field with the radio turned off. Did catch a couple at it in a car during a midnight patrol. and this is before dogging was invented.

.
I remember one year when the Dogend war games were carried out on top of Dover Cliffs.
Boots Taylor was 'Sunray Major'
Paddy Weeks - 'Sunray Minor'
Seem to remember it was night time, Burglars vs Musns.
In a slit trench getting a bit of shut eye with Taff Cox, when Drum Major Andy Crofts runs past our trench firing a 'Gimpy' from the hip.
John Wayne to a tee.
We (the band) applied our cam cream in streaky lines on our face.
Paddy Weeks looked like a reject from the Black and White Minstrals Show.

I won't go into detail in here as that WOULD be dissin', but I for one certainly didn't 'understand' his behaviour towards me (and others) long enough ago to make it no longer important in my life...

I remember this one......
I was playing, errrmmmm...oh yes! .....2nd Clarinet in the rear rank.
The Funeral of Lord Louis.
'Admiral of the Fleet, Louis Francis Albert Victor Nicholas Mountbatten, 1st Earl Mountbatten of Burma, KG, GCB, OM, GCSI, GCIE, GCVO, DSO, PC (25 June 1900 – 27 August 1979) was a British admiral and statesman and an uncle of Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. He was the last Viceroy and first Governor-General of independent India, and First Sea Lord, as was his father, Prince Louis of Battenberg. He was killed by the Provisional IRA, who planted a bomb in his boat at Mullaghmore, County Sligo in the Republic of Ireland.'
Lots of rehearsals of the funeral with Jolly Jack at Eastney Barracks.
A full dress rehearsal along Southsea sea front.
02.00am rehearsals along the route in London.
The day itself.....sunny, and lots of people.
A couple of weeks before he was murdered, Fleet Band were at the Royal Albert Hall for the annual 'Burma Star Renion'.
During a break in rehearsals, quite a few of the band were playing 'Frisbee' when Mountbatten walked past, he picked up the Frisbee and tried to throw it.
A great loss. As Colonel Commandant of the Royal Marines, he was the 'Saviour' of the Royal Marines on a few occaisions when HMG tried to loose the Corps in 'Defence Cuts'..

Anyone that was in FOSNI at the time were spitting feathers.....His death happened when we were just about to start the Great Carlisle Fair. a teriffic annual event that we all looked forward to. B+B in the Castle, Tom Gallaghers egg banjos, day and night. Loads of lovely beer at the Crown and Mitre and a couple of rounds of Golf in between. Well, that came to an abrupt end and all our subsistence had to be returned. I think we were receiving about £13 per day subsistence, and spending 50p per day for your camp bed in the Castle. I suppose it was good to quote Max Boyce and say, "I was there". But to be there and skint.....huh.....
