Naval Puishment 1848!I found a list of punishments from 1848, some of the items on the list of offences.
For bad cooking=12 strokes of the whip.
For stealing a major's wig=12 strokes of the whip.
For skulking=12 strokes of the whip.
For running into debt on shore=12 strokes of the whip.
For tearing a sailor's frock=9 strokes of the whip.
For filthiness=12 strokes of the whip.
For noise at quarters=6 strokes of the whip.
For bad language=12 strokes of the whip.
For dirty and unwashed clothes=12 strokes of the whip.
For being out of hammock after hours=12 strokes of the whip.
For throwing overboard the top of a spittoon=6 strokes of the whip.
For skylarking (running up and down the rigging of a ship)=6 strokes of the whip.
For being naked on deck=9 strokes of the whip.
I think I'm on about 132 strokes so far and it's only 11.10am!

I think that was punishment enough Melch......not being able to enjoy a dump for 19 yrs is enough punishment i think. However....throw a couple of lashings in too....why not?

Extract from Board Minutes.

Caning in the Royal Navy.
2835. The First Lord informed the Board that he viewed with considerable concern the amount of caning of boys that took place in the Navy, and that it appeared from a paper which had been prepared, that the extent to which this punishment was resorted to varied very considerably between ship and ship and between the two Training Establishments. He therefore wished the Board to consider the whole question, and for this purpose a memorandum would be circulated prior to a fuller discussion by the Board.
Caning of Boys in the Navy: Note by Naval Law Branch, 10th July, 1931
The rules at present governing caning as a summary punishment in the Royal Navy are as follows:- (Art. 585, Clause 2, K.R. & A.I.)
"585.
2. CANING on the breech with clothes on is limited to boys rated as such and to Boy Buglers and Band Boys when embarked and is to be inflicted with a light and ordinary cane. The number of cuts or blows is not to exceed 12, and the punishment is not to be carried out in public. Caning is intended for the serious offences of theft, immorality, drunkenness, desertion (in special cases as an act of leniency), insubordination and deliberate or continued disobedience of orders. In the absence of the Captain, the Commanding Officer is not to order caning to be inflicted, unless the Captain shall be absent from duty by permission of superior authority for more than 48 hours."
In the boys training establishments, there is a further limitation that not less than 6 cuts must be awarded, the object being to emphasise the fact that the award of caning as a punishment is restricted to the more serious offences.
So, when did the ‘hang ‘em up in a mattress cover and……….etc' come in to force?

Pusser,
I don't know if you were ever Duty SNCO in Deal but there was a variation of that punishment used by many of the SNCOs:
"Pick up your matress and three laps of the main parade with it above your head, NOW!!"
Perhaps not as harsh as caning but a damn sight more preferable to us!!

While i was at ganges.the lesser 3 strokes of the can as doled out quite often .There was also the lesser lesser punishments of up and down laundry hill the dreaded shotley routine round the parade ground in oilskins no matter what the weather up and over the devils elbow in quick time holding the dustbin out in front of you .and of course the favorite lovely FAITH HOPE CHARITY .The lesser except the dustbin usualy collective punishments

And to be fair, I don't think the punishment fits the crime
