Dogend band

So - here's the contest...

Who can tell us most about this photo? (Botty Bundy probably, or maybe MBT) Name names, place etc. (Who IS that skin horn player?)

bootybandy

It's got to be the Piazza in Gib. Clarinet players are possibly Bill Callow, Sid Sheard and Bob Richardson, Bassoon - Ivor South, Euph - Martin Sharp. Horns - Walters and Waters and, oh I don't know that guy. Cornets - Tad Marriott, SP Williams, Dee Lindars, Paddy Patterson, (Is that Mons??) and Ian McKinnell. Tenor Sax - Gaz Davies. Oh and the guy in Civvies back Right, was that Bob Downer. That's as good as I can do.
Hornblower

What about the back of your head you flid!!!!!

And yes, it is Mons.

If you look carefully you will see that that is the crook of a Tenor Saxamafone and not an Alto. It's all in the Viva.
Hornblower

Whooosh - there goes Concord - over my head.

That's the trouble when someone starts to talk music to me, the shutters go down. Wossa crook?

Give ya that one Botty, coulda sworn it was you. Soz.
bootybandy

I was most probably on Gazs left with Terry Bishop?

Hi Stuey. Ivor here. What a shock seeing my face on screen. I expect you remember this trip to Gibraltar. I can't remember the exact year ('73-'74?) but the photo was taken in the Piazza outside the City Arms. This I remember well as the first time we walked into the bar the delightful barmaid looked me straight in the eye and said "I KNOW YOU". Only turned out to be the girlfriend of a friend of mine who used the same local as me in Chatham. Small world indeed. Looking at the photo I can see myself on Bassoon, one of the Sharp brothers on Euph, Wally Waters, Tubs Waters and another Horn player who shall remain nameless, possibly Bob Richardson (Clt), Cornets were Tad Marriott, Taff Davies, Dee Lindars. The other three cornets names have been lost in the mists of time. Ah happy days indeed. In the meantime Stu' congrats on your forthcoming nuptuals and I assume the lovely Tara has been checked out by the local Psychiatrist. Great reading your posts and keep sending the attachments. Till the next time mucker, all the best, Ivor.

Those 3 Al Queda lookalikes at the back look a bit dodge.
bootybandy

Not Al Queda Aaron, those were the SAS guys that had a little incident at a Gib petrol Station soon afterwards. I think they were checking out the Band for possible recruits
sticky blue

Suspects more like - another bandy prank
bootybandy

Ah, you heard then
townsergeant

Never was a dogend myself, although an honorary one when on loan from training in 1972 for Guildford Show and boy...what an eye-opener to life in a real RM Band!

Slight erratum in bootybandy's naming of the band in the photo, (which I have to admit are mostly skin and essence!) is that is Ken 'Willie' Shears, golfer-extraordinaire, on clarinet and not Sid Sheard, MWing sports storeman-extraordinaire?

LONG LIVE THE DOGENDS!
Hornblower

Yes Billy, you're right about it being 'Sheepy' Shears. He's one of only few SNCO's that I got on with, mainly because he knew how to pay respect to a person rather than treat them like a child.

I must have been abroad when you did the Guildford show, cos I don't remember you joining us.

Stuey
bootybandy

I should have got Ken Shears name correct, he was my instructor for a short time whilst under training. Ah well, cheers Bill.

You were only zig zaging because you had to many wets inside you
Aaron Aardvark

He didnt have the other 'bulgers' next to him to keep him straight...in a line that is....Bulgers have problems when they are disconnected with each other.

Do Bulgers have a problem keeping "Straight" then Double A? I'm sure all the Bulgers that know of a famous Earls Court watering hole had a slight curve to them.!
Aaron Aardvark

Only the old seedy 'bulgers'.....im sure the newer models are slightly less bendy. (aaron back-pedals like mad to ensure Deli doesnt kick him up the aardvarse)

Hope she kept her back to the wall
RAB

Well to get back on thread here, I still don't know if I'm a dogend or not... MBT has explained his theory, and I'm too old for that , and yet he's a dogend and is older than me . Confused yet??? (I am)..At the end of the day I've been called worse and better things than a dogend, so I really don't give one.. ..and I'm trying to stop smoking anyway.....
sticky blue

Any time, any place, any where booty
Hornblower

Soooo,

just to show that Botty Bundy really was there....

So, let's see more names then...
Hornblower

You gonna show us your age Aa Aa?
Aaron Aardvark

Ohhhhhhhhhhh!!! Lots of beheaded bandys on the back wall and those 3 al Queda characters are still lurking. Im scared of this picture.
Aaron Aardvark

Actually... does anyone remember the time we did the Mexico Rally, leaving from Wembley Stadium 1970..Rock Band "Cream" were on the gig. As they were setting up their gear, "shags" Lambert said to Ginge Baker, Cream's Drummer.."Can't say I'm very impressed".....Baker nearly leapt off the stage at him...Waaaaaaaaaaaahhhhh..shags was always winding up...

As for the photo stuey....the bass has a good tan....still slightly disturbed by the helmets on the wall though.
RAB

Ooooooh now Mr Aardvark..That's one gig I WAS on..... ....Paddy Hopkirk and his Mini Cooper etc.......Ido re call that story, but wasn't present at the time. Now you've got my old detective instincts all aglow again...Don't suppose you'll tell me what instrument you played..??? or Knocked ten bells out of????
bootybandy

Here goes then Stuey Baby.
Conductor, Boots Taylor.
Clarts, Andy Cunningham, Dave Bromley, Paul Moody, Andy Henderson?, Ken Shears, Bob Richardson, Butch Rutter,
Saxamaphones, Alto, Moi, Tenor, Gaz Davies.
Flutes, Brian Oates, Rivs Howgill.
Oboe, K. Tomlinson
Eb Clart, Geoff Bishop.
Basoon, Ivor South.
Cornets, Tad Marriott, Steve Williams, Dee Lindars, Paddy Patterson, Mons North, Ian McKinnell.
Horns, Walters, Waters and Stuey Baby.
Euphs, Brian Allen, Martin Sharp.
Troms, Alan Rigden, Roy Fleming/Dave Emblem, Mick Hickman (MBT)

Almost as bad as double reeders. Having been married to an Oboist for 30 years...I can say that with glee and pride....LOL
Hornblower

I've only been married to my double reeder for about 30 minutes!!!

Trust me...after 30 years you will get used to scraped reeds, sawdust everywhere and the best....coloured threads wrapped around table legs.
jamesb135

Isn't that Bob Carrolgees on horn there? Wheres spit the dog?
2nd Clarinet

Dog-End Band

The one who has been missed is the clarinet player next to Ken Shears and it is.....Andy Henderson.

"Look mum....all those men have hair (exept that funny french horn player), and it isn't grey."

Looking at the back of my head on this picture, I can see DM Crofts was wrong to tell me to get a hair cut.

Was Brian Oats conducting?

Dog-Ends Rule!

He wasn't missed Bob. I got him a while ago. You most probably missed his name when you were speed reading through the thread.

Pith Helmet

Is that Tim Smye-Rumsby walking past?

Nahhh.....Too tall!

It was on that trip that the Governor gave a reception and we cleared his place of gin. As I recall, the bulgers had been fighting with each other the night before (it may be that Tad had joined in with Mac McGill as well) and everyone was looking the worse for wear. I have this photo of us all at the reception looking younger than any of us could remember and the bulgers are sporting trendy black eyes as we are all stood in lovats we had slept in. We are trying to be interested in the speech being given, but we are p***ed and ready to to do more. Was this the trip that Andy Cunningham and Dave Bromley (and perhaps others) were charged for borrowing wine from the chiefs mess?

Get the picture up on the site Dee....
MrJpig

Didn`t want to hijack Doms thread but found another pic of a more serious looking Steve 'T' Weir along with a few other Fleeties.....I think Benny Benville got proper glasses soon after this pic was taken!!

townsergeant

Mr Benville visited Townsergeant Towers for coffee yesterday

Benny was one of the founder members of the Professional Eaters Club, USA 1985!

A quick inventory of the silver required then Bill......

Actually, it was at my Great Mongeham residence and not the Town Hall!
bootybandy

Do you frequent the Leather Bottle there Bill?

Used to do Pub Quiz there a few years ago.....not been there for ages.

Prefer to have a drink at home!

Oh - this is a real long story, but the upshot was that they were the only two that weren't charged! And all because they were lightweights and went to bed a 03.00 hours o'clock (zulu time).

The great bit was that Dave Dawson saw me and said, "Tell the b'stards that (ahem) borrowed the wine from the Chiefs mess that I want to see them." As far as he was concerned, Dave and Andy were in the clear, 'cos they hadn't been in front of the Captain earlier.

When I saw Dave and Andy, I told them that Drummy wanted to see them and they thought I was waffling, so didn't go!! Eventually I persuaded them I was on the level (made a change) and they slid up to DD to say, "You wanted to see us Drummy?"

"No, why would I want to see you two?"

(That b'stard Thorn! He WAS swingin' it!!) "Erm, the wine? - Chiefs mess? Stolen? ..."

They still didn't get charged though - jam-stranglin' gits.

When we got back to Pembroke, the remaining OD's (Me, Tad, Steve Williams, Butch Rutter - all the usual suspects) were given 7 days confined to barracks and extra work etc. It was a great laugh actually.
Hornblower

So, here's a picture of a few Dogends relaxing - but where? Who? When? etc...

Start with the rude one standing at the back...

There's even a prospective DoM there!

Another nearly got murdered a few years later... who knows that story?

bootybandy

I'm back...Sorry about that, been on a little sojourn to France.
ooh the rude one. Well that could only be Dave LeSeur now a copper in the Channel Islands, with Dick Stapleton with the cool shades on also at the back. L - R at the front is Roy Smith, Bob Richardson, don't know the next one,,,, then Dee Lindars. Behind Dee is Gerry Salway and looks like Mick Stone at the far back. I don't know the one behind Stu as I can't make out the features. I'm sure Big LesBryan will tell you it's Gran Harbour in Malta picture possibly taken at the NAAFI at St Angelo.
lesbryan

Yes that looks like Malta to me.It looks like corradina ii the background so it would be St angelo
Hornblower

Yup! You got it all except one...

Not Dick Stapleton - I never knew him and don't think he was ever a Dogend, might be wrong though!

Sooo, who is the one in the shades?
Hornblower

Oh - and the bulger at the back?
Mr Bass Trombone

The one at the back is indeed Mick Stone the Burgalar. As for the one in those classy shades looks to me like Pete Rutherford, cant say for certain though cos I aws long gone by then, some things never change though mi old mucker Dave(La Crappo) le Suer up to tricks as usual.
Hornblower

Well done, Corporal Peter Rutherford it was - how he put up with me calling him Peter Pain all the time is totally beyond me!!!!
