3 Cdo Bde Band - Libya (1960?)

I always remember with a wry smile when we (40 Commando) had just finished a NATO Exercise with the American Marines in Libya - 1960'ish.

Bomba Beach, I think it was called, was where the Yanks, with their searchlights, massive tents and Coca-Cola machines ablaze with lights could be contrasted with our camp which was in darkness (no smoking allowed after dark).

In the morning 'hands to bathe' was piped and we all, Brits and Yanks, jumped willingly (in the b....... buff) into the blue Mediterranean, despite the fact that the tide was out. To add to our enjoyment of the scene the Band of 3 Commando Brigade was formed up on a Rhino Ferry, as I recall, and commenced to play all the well-known marches, both American and British.

The whole splendid programme ended up with the American Marine Corps Hymn (I think) - you know, 'From the Halls of Montezuma, etc.', 'A Life on the Ocean Wave', 'Rule Brittania', etc.

While we, your typical Bootnecks, swam around in three feet of water blissfully ignorant of the highly charged music that was being played, our American cousins stood bolt upright to attention and saluting from the first strains of 'From the Halls of ...' to the final of ' God Save the Queen', completely naked, in three feet of water! The whole process must have lasted at least fifteen minutes.

Needless to say we were doubled-up with laughter at the American Dream as they really looked ridiculous; goodness only knows how the Band kept on playing!

Just a memory from the past which might amuse!
