Quasijock

Hi there MC901.
However I don't know what kind of advice you could get from us. :)
ZedHorn

Quasi.... the women will learn thousands of bits of useless random stuff that will while away hours online and prove to be of no purpose in life whatsoever but to make her happy!!! Never underestimate the power of the Volly!!!
pussycat

Hi & welcome MC901,

Hope you enjoy your visits to the forum.
MC901

thanks all seems a friendly site.

Zed u are probably right but if it keeps the ladies happy!!!!!!

I am sure you will all be a wealth of information

I guess our main hope is that if any of you see any old instruments going begging you will think of us! Despite being a RM Cadet band and looking the part we actually are affiliated to the RM band by nothing other than name. We receive no funding etc.

The sad thing is we have cadets wanting to learn instruments but nothing for them to play on. we are trying to get some kind of funding but as you know this all takes time and kids dont have much patience they soon get bored and want to leave. We rotate them on the kit we have but its not like them having an instrument they can take home to practice on etc.

so remember

if with your kit you are done send to 901!!

all donations gratefully received!!

Volly bands need kit themselves. We are in the same boat as you and do gigs to subsidise our band funds. We get the odd RM cast off but if we want a decent instrument individuals buy their own. Also Volly bands have only just managed to get new suits from the RN as we have been using second hand stuff from 'dressing up cupboards' for years.
ZedHorn

'dressing up cupboards' yep - my Nos ones are someone else cast offs!

i'm afraid that Gromit is correct 901. Apart from the bloke at the front waiving his stick who is a paid RMBandy, and the odd bit of tuition for those nearer a full time RMB, we get not a lot from them either. Second hand - VERY second hand tooters from the stores which can be utterly unplayable! They are all still accountable for 25 years or so on inventories too!

That said, if anyone has a gluttony of cornets or tenor horns (yes please, get rid of the tenor horns!!) I'm sure we can send them your way!
The BB's

Now come on zed you know you have heard a brilliant tenor horn player so stop knocking them all the time, having said that i agree we only get RM cast offs (quite a few years old) so a lot of us play our own instruments, or ones that brass bands loan us (I know I mentioned brass bands sorry zed)
The BB's

Just remembered got a brill horny devil for you but don't know how to upload to site. Perhaps deli can help???
ZedHorn

don't get me wrong I LURVE brass bands....... Yorkshire bird me!!!
MC901

looks like we are all in the same boat then!!

as a matter of interest are you adult bands or youth bands?
Quasijock

Believe it or not, we're all adults here!
The Royal Navy Volunteer Bands exist to provide an extra curricular activity for serving Naval personnel and civilians attached or connected to ships and establishments. However the bands have no operational role.
ZedHorn

we have a couple of sea cadets in our band... only cos their Dad works on the air station and plays footie with the bandy!!

but mainly we are grown up... cue laughter all round!
pussycat

He, he, he, yeeees. Our love of music keeps us young................
MC901

if any of you get a chance you can check us out on youtube just type in 901 troop

let us know what you think (nothing rude though)

please remember we only added all the instruments 4 months ago.
any advice is welcome
Wee Mac McDrums

MC901,

Just checked out your postings on you tube,

It's great!

I think you will get lots of good 'Pointers' on this site....

you can also follow the link to the Royal Marine Band Forum, and have a wee chat with some of the professionals,

the guys that use the forum have hundreds of years experiance between them, and always have good words of advice or encouragement to offer (usually just before they hijack your thread, and go a wee bit mad!!)

But you can always ask at the drummers grot for views and advivce on how the kids could do better at banging their drums!!!

Good luck!

(and if your stuck, send a nice wee pm to 'admin', he'll put you on the right track)
MC901

Thanks for the comment its much appreciated.

I would like to think that as the kids get more experience and we grow our selection of tunes the band will go from strength to strength.

now we have a core of tunes and players we are going to try and expand the playing so that we play ensembles rather than seperatley due to the different keys etc.

We are currently working on the British Grenadier as the you tube video is the first time we ever played that in public and also A life on the ocean wave. Then we are going to go for the black adder theme tune.

If anybody has any suggestions of good tunes that are fairly simple to learn that would be great - baring in mind we have a range of experience ranging from pre grade 1 to grade 7.

thanks for the positive vibe guys it does help, however small the comment. also the kids love to see the comments on you tube so if you get a chance to check us out please do.

This one is a video that the kids have made themselves which I think shows their commitment to the unit - Please excuse the spelling though!!

Hi Sam!

Sorry I was looking for you on the RM Band site not this one!

I've put the clips up on the "other side" to see what response they get on there. All I can say is ..... have you warned Paul about "that" pick on the last clip?
