Hi
Well Done to you guys, after your performance I tipped you as the winners so was glad to hear you triumphed as the best marching band
I was at the festival with a marine cadet band where I am the instructor and your performance was of special interest to us as we are just about to start learning the swing march.
We currently play with a very basic set up due to the fact that we struggle to find scores at a level we can use ( the kids vary from complete beginners never having even picked up an instrument to reasonably competant) we have been fortunate enough to have made some contacts at Kneller Hall who are being a great help and with their assistance are going to move to a more professional approach which is going to be a lot of hard work but we are going to give it a shot they have given us the Swing March as our 1st piece to tackle.
The festival was fantastic we travelled from near to Gt Yarmouth but it was worth every minute and the kids were left very enthused by watching you guys.
one question raised by the band is whether you were using piccolos or Irish fyfes in your pieces perhaps you could let me know
anyway congratulations for the weekend we look forward to next year.

hi MC901, glad you enjoyed Saturday and thanks for your comments. I saw you guys all sat on the steps in your black and yellow T shirts... didn't realise you'd come THAT far... blimey, good effort!
We use piccolos. Swing March is a band favourite, not too hard for most instruments and can sound really good when worked upon. We normally play it on Carnival in Cologne with a silly 'bobbing' walk in the middle section so we had to concentrate very hard on Saturday to behave!!

thanks for clearing that up I said piccolos but the capt said irish fyfes - thats why Im the instructor and he isnt!!!!!!
no I wasnt sure as I am a cornet player so not too hot on anything non brass!
i wasnt aware of any bobbing on Saturday your whole performance was tip top and the Capt really loved the way you did the anchor formation he wants us to do a homage to it (in other words we are gong to copy you!!)
thats should be a laugh we have only just cracked everyone marching properly - the problem we have is we just get it right and a new person joins the unit and band who has to be taught drill from scratch
do you have much turnover of players in your band?

Definately piccolos - I should know... I am one, well I try to be whenever I can get my music back of Zed
Irish fifes have been used from time to time for a particular effect in concert band performances - never marching. Piccolos are bad enough to get in tune!

Big Ted

now i understand where the bobbing at cologne comes from - too much beer
it sounds as though your philisophy (try spelling that after a few) is
15 minutes practise = 1 hr pub time
anyway the alcohol seems to have the desired effect you sound good on it!
and its nice to hear that you all have a lot of fun at the same time.
I dread to think what our lot would be like if they were old enough to go to the pub they are bad enough on coke and e numbers

The problem is Nigel, I just don't think my pink wibbly fish is worth looking at to be honest. I was told it was impressive enough to catch a big one, but to date I've not had a single sniff, let alone a bite. I just don't think you'd be impressed. Zed seemed to like it, but I'm not sure how good a recommendation that is, as I don't think she really knows her way round these sorts of things either. Dolly keeps telling me the equipment I have is more than good enough to do the job, but I've just never had anything tangible to even take a photo of, let alone whack on the head and eat.
And anyway, you'll need to ask nicer than that. Certainly if you want to see the flourescent slimey one. I think it may be in a special league all of its own - it only comes out if the conditions are right and a bite looks likely.
