Washington 1976The occasion, a State Banquet in honour of the President of the USA held
in the British Embassy in Washington.
The orchestra was in the centre of the ballroom, with the guests all around, and before they arrived, I had a good look around at the place names to see who was attending. The musicians spotted a number of well known faces including Elizabeth Taylor and Mohamed Ali at an adjacent table but I decided that it would not be tactful to point out who was sat immediately behind the players (about 3 yards from the leader, Alan Slaughter) As the guests were leaving, Yehudi Menuhin came over, shook hands with Alan, and said how much he had enjoyed the music. Alan was speechless!
