Probbly too bloody serious a question for on here :-)Can anyone with tell me when the word of command to bring a rabble of sailors to attention was changed from 'Ho' to 'Shun'.
I have noticed more and more RN bands being called to order with band 'shun.
This is indeed the way that the real bandies would do it but surely we should still be keeping our own words of command?
Flood gates well and truly opened............

As an ex VBI I can honestly say that I used to just because I was giving the commands, however I can say that whenever anyone in Dark Blue was out front then they commenced with the matelot stuff, bar giving the halt command on the wrong foot!!!!!!

I must admit that my word of command was more like 'Tuh' as the T sound is a bit clearer and gives a definitive start point. The S of 'Shun' is a creeping in sound and leads to indecisive drill movements.

It's all getting far too complicated for me on here now

Dolly, the only time our band has heard anything other than the order "HO" is when a VBI barks a grunt as in " BAND Ugh". (Thanks for the memory Melchy)
I agree with you, we should use the naval command rather than the military command.
It will be interesting if the adjudicators pick up on this at the festival this year.......Don't hold your breath though

No comment from me on adjudicating at the Festival.....

Yeah Mealchy, adjudicating at festivals!!! (are they old and deaf?)
What were they thinking of!, 2005, fanfare and allegro ( or 3 bands playing 5 tunes at once as it sometimes sounded!) WE NAILED IT!, Pity you needed the kit drumer to take your contacts out that afternoon, pity the !
I'll always remember you as the guy who said " Mac, if you don't split the skin on that Timp, then your playing it too softly for this piece!"
I now base all my fffz markings on that comment!! (my ppp's mean "give bandy a throbing headache")
Hope things are good with you and your not splitting too many things (or notes) with your horny thing (is it french?)!!!!!!

Actually, when I was a little Band Boy doing my Junior Musicians NCO training back in the late 50's the word was "TUN". This really gives the emphasis and crispness to the whole command of "To Attention"
Oh! those halcyon days?? God, I'm getting old!
