RACE FOR LIFE; FEMALE BAND WANTED

Does anyone remember the conversation we had at Wetherspoons this sunny festival Saturday??? I believe Sponge, Bebee (fem) and Chrissie B were all there, amongst many others!

For those that weren't or whom have forgotten here's the plan - and it is not my plan, I take no credit for it whatsoever!!!

Point A; We form a female marching band, made up of vollies, serving booties whom we know, members of Horndean, Hampshire Police band and any other bands we know in which there are girls, who play and who march (bimble!!)  A balanced band would be nice so if you play more than 1 thing let us know.

Point B; We find a race for life event 2009 near most of the band - so either near Heron or Pompey, probably the latter! Ideally an event on a Sunday, to allow us all to meet up on Saturday, for a very short rehearsal and all important social gathering.

Point C; we do the race for life as a 'March for life' complete with drum majoress, in Pink T shirts, shorts and trainers and the hat of your band! Lots of good (easy) marches on the way round, and I know we've already got a corps of drums of at least 2 for interspersed drum solos!! the course is 5km. For those Colognites or Vannesers amongst us, that's a doddle!!

Point D; we raise thousands of pounds in sponsorship for Cancer research Uk, and probably get ourselves on the local telly!!!

Point E; we have a cracking good time!!!

So what do we do next.

Appoint a committee of course, this will take some organisation.
we need; date and band co-ordinator
             T shirt organiser
             sponsorship secretary
             accomodation organiser
             social event co-ordinator
most importantly a very good/uber organised music monitor!

As it is likely to be Portsmouth based, I think it would be advisable if those based in Pompey sorted out social, accom and music.

I volunteer to hunt down an appropriate race date and co-ordinate options with key bands to ensure no major gig clashes. I'll also try and ensure we've got all sections covered musically.

The rest... is up to you.... although I'm nominating Sponge on social duties!!

Things won't happen for a few months yet as no dates have been released for 2009 but I think it's wise to get word around our bands once back off leave and get a few things at least thought about!

I also think that's the longest posting I've ever made.....

and it's quite sensible.... "nurse!!!!!!!!!!!!!"
greenfairy

Sounds like an awesome idea to me - count me in (was gonna say with bells on but people would take that far to literally!)

One minor snag - I don't do pink
ZedHorn

I'm sure we can make one exception; afterall.. there's always one!!!
bikertash

i'm up for it as long as the race date is after july ( i know that means either during leave or when its starting to get rainy again).

but then again if we did it in august then that would mean we had no band gig clashes. just a thought.
bassdrumal

As discussed at the time - although I think you now have that covered - If you need a Bass Drummer and dont have one - Ill wear a dress..................possible i might have one somewhere !

Well.....I do work at a Royal Marine camp now
admin

If you can't find a dress Al, I'm sure I can find you a cheeky off the shoulder number from my locker... errrr... I mean Charity Shop.
Gromit

Count me in, Doll Face.

Bye the way, I'm off-line for the next three weeks as I'm going on me 'olly dayz'.

Gromit

PS - can I swish my pom poms, pweeese  ! !
ZedHorn

I'll put you down as Cornet or pompomming tenor drummist!!

as for you boys.... you've both got jobs already... did Gromit not inform you Deli... you and BDA are the water carriers!!!

Have a lovely hols mate!! send us a postcard and see you soon. Z x
greenfairy

water carriers still have to dress appropriately though
ANTS

sound like fun!! As long as I don't get sent off anywhere with work, count me in.

If you need any help organising i'd be happy to help
Anne Picc

Definately in - sounds a belting idea!  With or without capes?!
greenfairy

I feel the need for sequinned capes coming on....
Princess Fiona

Count me in and I don't mind help organising the music.  If anyone has done it before do we have to wear the t-shirts provided?  If not we could make our own, it wouldn't cost much.
Princess Fiona

Oh and a bit of forward thinking we'd have to be a narrow band to let the runners pass us!!
Apricot

I'm up for it, but also do not do pink!
ZedHorn

I think we might just start from the back!!!

and consider yourself on T shirt duty!! thanks for volunteering!!!
Chrissie B

Yep, count me in! (ba-ra-rum ba-ra-rum usually does the trick)

Oh, and Princess Fi - if you are t-shirt monitor, Ann BB is your best contact for printing/supplying at excellent prices!
Spongealoolah

Hellloooooo.

I am still alive!!

I'll do the social bit and anything alse any of you might like to volunteer me for.

I have a few of the Horndean lot that are interested.  I also have a music monitor if you need one (I have asked her & she agreed 'in principle' so that must be a yes!!)

I think thats about it.

See you on the pink countermarch (in about a years time!!!!)
ZedHorn

Guys.. I mean girls, this is really good feedback so far! committee update!

date and band co-ordinator  Moi
T shirt organiser  Princess Fi /Ann Bebee
sponsorship sec Position still available, someone with sensible head needed!
accomodation organiser  Position still available, someone with lots of friends in Portsmouth or someone who knows a mess manager or 2 at Nelson would be great!!
social event co-ordinator Sponge
music monitor! someone who sponge knows!!
water boys - Deli and BDA

all volunteers welcome!
Gromit

In case you let me swish, I have secured my very own limited edition pink tenor drum swishy pom poms to use!

Spoiler:

RAB

Ahaaaaaaaaaah.. I know where that pic was taken Gromit.... Beiruit...

And is that a spot on your nose or a bit of Stornoway Black Pudding..??
Sooty

Please count me in - sounds like a fab idea - Marie - I also have a connection for someone who prints tee shirts if you get stuck!!
The BB's

I'll do the t-shirts at the best price I can all we need is ideas for what goes on them. I would suggest VOLLIE DOLLIES has gotta be on there with possibly cancer research logo if anyone can get me a copy ( or I'll look for it on the internet and redraw it)
Pink marching gear wahay can we get pink boots as well????
ZedHorn

Thanks Ann..

I'll put you down to help out...  as of yet we need a confirmed venue so nothing to do for a while yet, won't be til next spring / summer.

As for the pink boots... whatever mate... whatever!!
geekygirl

Hi, I'd definately be up for playing in the band, and my little sis was interested too (not a vollie band member but in other marching bands for about 20 years, and plays cornet better than i do) There were a couple of people in Sultan who said they'd be interested.

I think it's a brilliant idea. Looking forward to it.
admin

I'm not having a sex change to join in but if anyone has a slinky little number I'll put it on... I'm not doing the gig, I just fancy wearing the frock

My mum's really keen to join in - if I get her a triangle can she come along too?

Sponge was spreading the word yesterday when we were at Wooton Bassett so hopefully we'll have a big group of us and make it fabulous
ZedHorn

yep - bring Mummy fairy - find her a marching hat of sorts and she can triangle or cymbal no probs..

Saw Wooton Bassett on the news last night ( you weren't on it tho!), very honourable gig.. well done all!
greenfairy

If you go to the Sky news website there's a photo of the back of my head Was a really good gig to do - I think everyone was proud to be there and enjoyed it immensely.

UPDATE!!!

The dates are soon to be announced. I have registered with the website for info as soon as it is made available. We will all need to register online to be allocated a place in the race once we decide on a date and venue.

On balance, I think more people use facebook than this forum regularly so I am creating a group on there which will be the main focal point for organisation. Our stumbling block to date is finding a tuba player and bass drummer (not in drag!) the race organisers are very tight on it being a girls only event apparently. Tonight I have a few names of girls within the RMBS who may be able to help.....fingers crossed!

I'll get the group going live in the next day or so and invite everyone who has expressed an interest. I would appreciate it if you all invite other females of musical?? persuasion who may be interested to join us... this could be awesome if we do the right ground work... please help!!!

many thanks, Zed x
bassdrumal

Want me to ask the Band at CTC?  Im sure I can get someone interested in becoming BDB (Bass Drum Bird)
ZedHorn

thanks for asking.. that would be great...link them to the facebook group!

Ta
The BB's

For those who don't do pink, how about black tees with flourescent pink writing?? I did some of these for Lisa's (stix) hen do and they looked rather good (even if I do say so myself). I managed to supply the t-shirts and put writing front and back for £10 each.

Let me know what you think
Chrissie B

Sounds ideal!
ZedHorn

cheers bird! will keep you posted, join the facebook group for more updates!

Z x
bassdrumal

Why dont you see if you can get sponsorship?
ZedHorn

that's the idea of the race Al... you get sponsored!!!!

I'm sure someone will hustle you out of a tenner!
dollydrumstick

I think he meant from the likes of a brewery....
ZedHorn

oh.... I see.....  lets get us all in first!
bassdrumal

Thank you Mr Drumstick
My sentiment entirely, get sponsorship from a company of some description.  Now lets see.  The Insurance company, Sheilas Wheels or whatever it is, they wear lots of pink!  Pop to a T Shirt manufacturer and ask them to donate them.  Come on Zed........And yes, a brewery is ALWAYS good!!
dollydrumstick

If not a brewery then maybe a local company - I don't know ... who is around that's local and might be interested, mmmmm needs to be pink...girly drink... how about This lot They are in Winchester and could be willing to help out, what with the current drive for sensible drinking and all that malarky,
bassdrumal

Good job they got us to help them out!
ZedHorn

right guys we're off.... need everyone female to register asap... If you can't do this date, consider registering and then giving your place to someone else who might be late off the mark if you can??

Portsmouth Sunday 19th July

http://www.raceforlife.org/choose-your-event

go go go....

Z x

please let me know if you do register so we can sort everything out asap
greenfairy

Hopefully mum & I will get registered tmrw (I'm trying to convince her to play cymbals but she wants to play triangle!)
ZedHorn

she can play whatever she wants - so long as she brings it...
Apricot

I am now officially registered....
greenfairy

I'm registered now and mum's in the process of it
Chrissie B

I'm officially registered!
ZedHorn

keep up the good work, registering and spreading the word, and us the facebook group...

hopefully this will be great... Chrissie can you ask people at Collingwood Monday night who might not use facebook or the forum regularly.. June, Ann, janet, Cat??bev and laura, kim and Helen?? we need registrations asap!

ta Z x
Chrissie B

Will do, Zed. By the way, do we need permission from the race organisers to do this as a band?
ZedHorn

update on permission...

should have all i's crossed and t;s dotted by tomorrow, see facebook page!
bassdrumal

Zed, now you have the dates, you might want to give Graham a call, see if he can sort you out with a BDB - he needed venue and dates before he looked into it for you
ZedHorn

Thanks Al.

update on permission is we're are all systems go..... woo and hoo to that..

plus we're probably going to be on the telly!!!!

Hi everyone..

just to remind everyone that the "march for life" is this Sunday 19th July in Portsmouth / Southsea stepping off at 11am.

We have 45 female musicians (including 2 current, one ex and one future member of the Royal Marines Band Service), a wonderful drum majoress and a few support crew who will be armed with buckets for donations on the day!

Cancer research UK really needs our support and we are going to play our hearts and souls out for the cause. To date the band has almost £4000 behind them in individual and group donations, please support us in person on Sunday or with good hard cash if possible! We will be easy to spot amongst the masses.. we're the noisy ones at the back!

www.raceforlifesponsorme.org/marchforlifeband

Thanks folks...  Z

Ps if you do donate during the race, notes are much lighter to carry 5km than coins.. thanks!
