RNVB Festival 2008

OK folks. That time of year fast approaches and it would be interesting to see how everyone is getting on preparing. Anything new coming? Any funny dits? Any poor excuses from anyone trying to get out of drill etc etc? Is Dolly at HMS Drake staying sober at the social? Come on people. We all tend to take it serious on the day but let's all lighten up and have some fun this year.
ZedHorn

Rich, I'm a bit lost - you write that is if we didn't have fun last year or the year before that!!! did you go to a different festival to me????

As for us at heron - we've been practicing marching forwards, backwards and sideways, holding hands lots and even have our fancy dress theme sussed.. now that's preparation! where did I leave my plunger...
Pompey Rich

Yes. It is fun but there are those that try to be too serious especially where marching is concerned. Perhaps it's just nerves on the day. I must admit though, I have missed the social for a couple of years.
Axl

I'm playing with Neptune this year, and I've even been to practise. Twice!
I don't think I'll get chance to go again before the fesival though.
greenfairy

Rich, I do hope you're not including me in the "taking things seriously" category cos when have I ever done that?

Yep - marching holding hands - lots & lots of holding hands!
Pompey Rich

GF we will have to put that to the test whilst marching. You and Apricot will now be targetted and I will march naked with a daisy sticking out of my bum.  Do you think the judges will notice at the festival?
Pompey Rich

Also Saturday Night is Party Time.
Young Sam is 18 on the festival day, Jase Penney is 22 the day before, and me and Mrs P will be celebrating our 20th wedding anniversary from 3 days before. And finally; the whole festival participants will be over the moon because such a good looking bloke as me will be there.
dollydrumstick

Yup managed to get to one practice ...but a few other things going on that I've got to get my head round for the weekend.....(I've not played seconds for years...aaaaaaargh!) so I've decided not to concentrate on the festival drum display until next week.

We're not doing too bad - we can still march up and down in a straight ish line whilst keeping our dressing..next week we might even get to play while practising :-)

As for staying sober (not sure whether to put for or during here!) the social - I'll try not to let anyone down (myself included).
Pompey Rich

Wotcher matey. Who's doing solo this year then? And what is 'drill'?
Pompey Rich

Don't forget Green Hairies you limp off on the left foot whilst Apricot will find a roundabout and just walk around in drunken Welsh circles.
God! I wish you two lovlies were in the Corps Of Drunks.

Well that's that over with - just did a drum display with the buglers from Plymouth, for Dean Farrar and Siran's wedding. For only three practices I don't think I let the side down too badly :-)

I'll be doing solo for the festival, but was obviously playing seconds for the drum display yesterday - not played seconds since about '94 so it was a bit of a culture shock  (acually forgot how bloody difficult it was!)
Anne was a bit puzzled that I wasn't playing first for centennial but when I explained that Russ Piner was playing firsts as he wrote it - she seemed to grasp the concept.

I'll probably get it on you tube soo you can take a sneeky peek.
ZedHorn

you rock!
Apricot

I'm scared now
Pompey Rich

My dear, Apricot. You have no reason to be scared whatsoever as daisy's are absolutely harmless.
Apricot

wibble!
windypipes

wibble wibble!

Hope thoes solo's are coming on well....

Gromit

Deli - can you do a Band Fest count-down ticker pweeeeese ??
bassdrumal

Probably in minutes now as time is ticking away !
admin

11 days and counting down...

Axl

I would like to draw to the attention of the gentlemen of Neptune band the new dress regulations contained in RNTM 112/08. It will affect our concert rig.
(ps What music are we playing?)
greenfairy

Oooh I like the shiny counter thingy....nice work Mr Deli Sir

And Axl, step away from the regulations.....that's it.....back away.....

Does this regulation only apply to bands north of the border then, or should every VBI have a quick read? Does it refer to the length of your kilt or the hairiness of the sporran? The recent crackdown on carrying knives and how it affects the Sgian Dubh? Perhaps it just states that gentlemen are not allowed to wear dresses!
Apricot

Yeay for Deli and his sunshiny counter-downer
windypipes

Does this mean that it will be nice and sunny on the day?

Or do we all need to do the Sun dance in 6/8

Pompey Rich

Yeah but the rumour is that all alcohol is banned until 8pm. Bad news indeed.

Al, did you mean Band Alcohol?
The sun is always over the yardarm somewhere in the east so set your watch to that time zone and bingo, you have the sun over the yardarm and sundowner drills can be carried out for the remainder of the day.
Glad ya'll like the sunny countdowner thingy, I should have done one ages ago!

It definitely applies to Neptune, possibly Drake (but it won't if the band hasn't changed since I last played with them), with an outside chance for other training or port bases. And a zero chance for Heron and Seahawk.

But feel free to check it out, then look on with envy.

Or apathy.
ZedHorn

will someone please explain to us mere minions and civvies who don't have access to such rules and regs what the chuff you are going on about! Ta xxx

Hmmmmm........ Must be something to do with submariners then.

BTW I have seen a Chief Aircrewman on a Merlin squadron wearing dolphins - he doesn't play in the band though!
Big Ted

Zed...................need to know basis.................and on the basis Tim hasn't told us anything....................we don't need to know!!!

We wear what we've got...........and look damn smart too!!!

He is just trying the old mind games before battle commences, you know what these submariners from far off remote cold places are like!!!

Big Ted
bassdrumal

Having looked at the aforementioned RNTM, I then disregarded it as boring and was certainly nothing to do with me!
admin

Fear ye not, it does not affect those of the other type, the strawberry mivvies, the minions or the peons, murmidons nor the peasants. Only those who wear the symbol of the dark side are indeed affected and they shall be cast out into the glory of the daylight.

PS, Don't worry, if you need to know, they will tell you...
Apricot

there are rules to this volly lark????    oh dear that's me done for then....
windypipes

Volly's dont do rules.

Well not from what I have seen.........

Anne Picc

Might have to do with Drake?  Come on Axl, please explain.  Most of us can't access military documents (and even if I could I doubt very much that I'd understand it   ).
ZedHorn

see Axl- I always knew it - you are Lord Voldemort!!
greenfairy

It's probably just a "make sure your dolphins aren't wonky" or something silly like that (does that include the ones on your shoulder though Axl?)
Gromit

Ah go on Axl, explain please .   Go on, go on, go on, go on, go on.  I can't be bovverd to dig the book out. I'll give you the fiver back that I owe you from band camp!!

Come out and march with the band then.
Apricot

*sings*
only a week to go,
only a week to go,
he-ho its nearly time, there's
only a week to go
yippee

Axl

Right, now that cat and pigeons are fully acquainted, I'll explain.
Anyone entitled to wear dolphins on their uniform may/must (depending on the interpretation of the RNTM) wear them on their 3As and 3Bs (i.e. concert rig) 38mm and central above the breast pocket or as miniatures on their tie as applicable.
So girls, civvies and those who didn't work hard enough at school can relax as it doesn't apply.
greenfairy

I'll be bringing my ruler so I can check now!
Big Ted

What happens if they are 37mm above???
Will the inspecting officer get his tape measure out??
Will you be deducted points for incorrect dolphins???
How does the inspecting officer know if you are a submariner and accidentally forgot to put your dolphins on??
You do realise that is one more thing that could go wrong or be incorrect??

I couldn't be a submariner.........so many things to remember

Big Ted
Axl

It's a good job breathing's an automated reflexive action, or else we'd all be having snags.
bassdrumal

Not everyone is wanting to join the submariner world of course Axl, I tried very hard at school, was even drafted to Submarines, but thankfuly was able to decline the offer to carry out water sampling, conduct health physics and drive the darn thing, I mean........Medicine comes into that where exactly??
Daddy B

Hi everyone I know you haven't heard from me for a while but I get confused with all this technoligy, still I couldn't help noticing the conversation about dolphins! I will be in Green its about time more of you joined me
Princess Fiona
