RE: Results

Hi Peeps,

Has anyone seen the mark sheets from the band festival yet? Thought they might be out by now.

Pete Tong, let us know who you really are, I'm a bit stumped. PM if necessary.
ZedHorn

as for the mark sheets... does it really matter??

Yes, I believe so.
Whilst the Festival is not primarily a contest, it is the PDM RM and President of the RNVBA annual inspection of the volunteer bands. It can be likened to the last week of a FOST work-up!
All members of a ships company are supposed to read the SST1's, (critique of an evolution) at the end of each day to see where they went wrong or in some cases where they are doing well.
Why for example did they receive a SAT as opposed to a V SAT is a very common occurance and the SST1 will explain why and how they can improve.
Excellence in all things is very difficult to achieve but I believe we must strive to reach it.
If we don't know exactly where we lost points, be it intonation, ensemble playing, balance etc. how are we supposed to improve.
Giving a brief and intelligent synopsis of the reasons behind an adjudication decision should be seen as a necessary requirement of fulfilling adjudication duties. It demeans no one to take the time to explain.

Precisely Quasi. In my experience the detailed comments are extremely useful. There are some who want to better the musical, as well as the all important social elements
ZedHorn

my point is simply that it is a festival!!!

Yes i see your point about annual inspections etc etc but at the end of the day, I am sure I speak for many vollies who know that the personal satisfaction of knowing we did ourselves, our oppos and our bandmasters proud out there stands for 1000% more than the learned (and appreciated don't get me wrong...) opinions of the adjudicators!

We must all strive to keep the standard rising each year, agreed. But, a pound of simple old fashioned rivalry and an ounce or two of self respect, pride and understanding of what it's all about will do just that! Given the fluidity and frequently changing contingent of players in several bands - service commitments and civilian ones alike, in addition to the drafting of new bandies to several bands before next year, some of the finer detail of marking will be irrelevant next time each band does a gig. Getting the same balance, same players to do the same gig... just not gonna happen!

Please do not think I was being flippant and all I am after is a party out of the RNVB service, it's not. I love playing my horn, I love sticking on my rig, marching up and down and feeling proud of what I do, AND feeling proud of who I do it with..
To me.. that's enough!
A

I'd like to see the marksheets simply so we can know what to improve on.

I also believe that we should advance as much musically each year as possible, and it's easier to improve when you know what to work on.

Quasi, I almost understood more than half of the word you used in your post! :))))))

but I dint understand the rest:((((

I think we should retire to the Ardencaple one evening to thrash out the pros and cons of the marking system and the (nice guys/bas****s (delete as required)) who judge us in our abilty to walk in a straight line whilst suffering from a hangover and trying to play something musical!!!!! ;)

Nope, I'd never do that as it's far too much fun socialising with you guys

I'm blaming myself for obviously not practising enough to build the stamina.....now where did I put my beer?!
ZedHorn

Apricot

I think the whole audience loved Ann's concert performance.
There were certainly a lot of people saying "I want to play cymbals" afterwards - she was fantastic.
ZedHorn

I want to see the video - Quasi... youtube it... STAT!
The BB's

Ann ROCKS!!!!
bikertash

i thought ann was really good, the faces she made, it really livened up the whole performance and showed what having fun whilst playing can mean. well done her.
