I never had much to do with Dave Dawson, however he did inspect us once whilst in about term 3 I think. We'd been in the field for a week and got out the previous evening. On parade he next day he asked the person next to me to hold out their hands. Upon closer inspection by the Drum Major and finding grime he leaned right in close and said in a very quiet spine chilling voice - "They're not very clean are they?" It was worse than any full on bollocking......
