What is a Volunteer Band?

I am hoping to join soon and was wondering what is a volunteer band?
Aaron Aardvark

It's a bunch of people who get together to blow and bang and get totally hammered voluntarily.

You forgot "insane" in the above description

We're a set of nine bands dotted around various naval establishments, providing musical support to each establishment and to the band service.

We rehearse one or two times a week depending on the band and the VBI (Vollie Band Instructor) in the evenings.

We are primarily for serving members or the RN, civil servants, or families of military personnel and retired bandies as an extra curricular thing (and serving members can get out of other duties if they play with the bands) although you get a good mix of ages and people.

As the booties can't be everywhere at once (as they're usually in the pub) our main gigs are divisions, mess dinners and the like, although we have most of our fun doing our own concerts, usually for a forces charity. We do some pretty high profile jobs, our band have recently done International Festival of the Sea and the Queen's 80th birthday party to name just a couple.

A lot of bands have smaller ensembles as well.

Every year we have a massive festival where we all compete in concert and marching displays, this year it's at Pompey Guildhall on the 1st of July,

and we also do several massed band gigs, in the past we've done tattoos, the Lord Mayor's parade in London, various Navy Days, and the annual trip to Cologne in Germany for their festival. LOTS of beer and a hell of a lot of fun.
We get paid in sarnies and beer.

So in other words, Aaaron was right, we're bunch of people who get together to blow and bang and get totally hammered voluntarily.
