Shortly after Peter Hemming took up his appointment as a newly promoted Lt. of CTC Band, a certain Maj General whilst inspecting the band on the parade asked of a young bugler the following question. " Do you think the bands improved since Lt. Hemmings been here?". "No sir" came the reply. ( Yes, i was that man so )

The name Peter Hemming sounds familiar. I want to say that he was a previous conductor of the Mantovani Orchestra prior to my joining it.

That crazy hound would try and catch a thrown stone in mid-air, irrespective of the size of the "stone". Dave was our Drum Major/Cpl Bugler at Arbroath, and always our "straight man" in the seven dwarves entry to a strange pub... Oooh thanks for retrieving those memories mate... |

No worries Rab, On occassions i used to look after 'Bobby' for Dave. I remember walking him along Exmouth sea front one summers day with a young lady in front of me, when 'Bobby' proceeded to stick his head right up her mini skirt. ( and i mean RIGHT up. ) That was the day i nearly received a 'right hook'.
If memory serves correct, Bobby died after consuming some type of poison. |

Aww.. that's a shame Bronco..Probably Dave's sense of humour... The last time I saw Dave was in Deal, and I think he was considering going to the Sultan of Oman's Band, or some other place as far away from Scottish winters as he could get...A true friend, of whom I have many stories I will never tell.. ..but some I must... |

I used to live just up the road from Dave in Exmouth, when I was in CTC Band. I will never forget the day his car would not start and he was doing a perfect "John Cleese" - punching, kicking and generally "filling it in" !!
It was almost as funny as when, whilst at Ganges, his car's engine blew up on the way back from a gig. Pistons and oily bits all over the place. Dave's comment to the mechanic: "Much of a job then is it, because I need it tomorrow?" !! |

I also remember when at Lympstone we were doing Last Post & Reveille on the parade ground on Rememberance Day. Dave was conducting. We had finished Last Post, waiting for Dave to indicate "Bugles Ready" for Reveille. After about 5 minutes, Dave realised that his watch had stopped and no amount of hitting it would make it start ! I will never know how we managed to play whilst giggling like a bunch of schoolgirls ? |
