Hello, I started playing the clarinet at 45 1/2 and now I'm 49.....I always wanted to join the band......but is wearing the uniform and marching compulsory?

Uniform's only compulsory when we're playing gigs (concerts, dinners, etc), at rehearsal you can wear what you like! However, if you're entitled to wear a uniform other than RN (e.g. your Army togs!) you can wear that. (Just be prepared from some gentle mickey-taking!) Quite a few of the bands have a varied selection of uniforms when on parade (HM forces, police, etc).
As for marching, if you're unable to (e.g. you have a bad back, use a wheelchair, etc), you can simply not put your name down for those gigs. However, if you're just unwilling to march, bear in mind that those engagements are often excellent days/weeks out!
