Hello, I am 49, ex army...but not band service. I am learning to play clarinet.I live in Lee-on-the Solent.

Welcome magsmag, glad you have found the RNVBs forum. Glad to see Chrissie B has already pulled you up a chair at Collingwood. It makes sense as you live that side of the Pompy lake. Hope you have fun making music.

We're a nice lot at HMS Sultan too, though noone else seems to have internet apart from me. I'm sure you'd be made very welcome by our wood-lickers if you came to try a rehearsal or two and see what you think.

don't give up - that's the worse thing you can do... go back, keep chugging along the odd note here or there and by christmas you'll be jingle belling with the best of them.....

if everyone in a volunteer band who couldn't play all their dots didn't go anymore - we wouldn't have any bands - me included!!!

go back...... and let the BBs look after you - once she BB has looked after herself!

Have to agree with that, confidence isnt exactly the problem, but more that i dont read music, make lots of it up as i go along usually, but above all i have a laugh!
And hey, whats the worst that can happen? You will get better and more confident!

Thank you for your replies, I know you are right....but I will try one next year. I'll just keep my head down and get my next grade over with first (3 weeks time). Ty, Mgt
